Yes, hand wrist and back but that’s my fault. Turning the inside of a bowl I’m overly cautious of a catch so I turn slow, which is not a good idea, and I stress about getting hit by the gouge. In time I might built some confidence, maybe not. I have an unfinished project on the lathe now I...

It holds the work piece “steady” reducing chatter and vibration.

Finished making a steady rest, should be a big help.

Most wood like most people have potential, it just takes some work to bring it to the surface.

Beautiful color. Has anyone turned redwood? I have some 3 1/2” x 8 1/2” planks that were a former water tank at a E. I. DuPont explosives plant nearby. Was thinking about some salad bowls for the in-laws. :D

I’m going to want an actual lathe if I continue play around with turning. This shop smith has too much chatter. The headstock shaft is actually a quill like a drill press and the inner and outer shafts have male and female splines. Just enough play to notice. It’s still a lathe but nothing high...

Good looking bowl, what wood is that? Wish I could find time to turn a few ideas I have. That mat isn’t there, you’re imagining things. :/:

Glued up some 2x4s with 1/4” plywood in between to have something to test a new gouge on. The wife liked it so it didn’t get fed to the wood stove.

Well Stig, lol, I’ve got to do it the hard way, it’s who I am. I glue the base and the first few rings up and turn the inside first. The length of my tool rest won’t allow me to turn the inside first. I draw a “print” of the bowl conture and cut a template as a guide then use a thickness gauge...

Thanks Stig. That one is about 8” tall and 16” across at the top, the wall is 1/4”. I thought for sure it was gonna blow apart.

That particular segment gets cut in two. Clamp the two pieces back to back and mill a 1/2” slot 1/2” deep 3/4” from the side both at the same time so they are inline. Glue a piece of purpleheart 1/2” wide by 1” long between the two to make the horizontal part of the cross. After it’s set you cut...
