I tried used rope once also. I appreciate your descriptions which evoke my experience. One image I used for extracting the core was “like Velcro…”
I will never do that again unless it was some great emergency! It’s hard for me to imagine an urgent situation that I could not deal with using...

The 5/16 is specified at 150 pounds WLL. I bet the 5/8 is fairly stout for a free rope.
Looks similar to some hardware store rope I like to practice hollow braid splices. Definitely for non-critical use. The stuff I get is small 5/16 and 3/8. It is 100% polyester with a non-woven cloth filler to keep it round. I pull out and discard the core.
I got some Samson Vortex remnants from Wesspur. spliced two dead eye slings. I am noticing a couple of places where the eye looks slightly less full. I don’t know if some pounding with a rubber mallet would even that out?
@friedrich I am really enjoying the soft fids from The Netherlands. I use them for the second bury even in looser ropes. I use the Toss Wand to pull the soft fid in place.
Today I had run out of looser ropes and I made the mistake of telling myself that this 9 mm Sirius Robline yacht line was...
I got a very nice wire fid from Ronstan D-Splicer in Holland. They have three sizes all designed for very small hollow braids especially dyneema.
You can buy the three sizes with plastic handle or get a kit with an aluminum handle that fits the three “needles”...
How do you mark the size of your tight eye? I
mentioned earlier how I struggle with tightly braided lines to run the final bury home. One trick I have resorted to is over sizing my eye a little and then seizing it if needed to hold the carabiner tightly. This adventure I tried to size it...
I have been working on making a Blue Moon Lanyard. In my past the second bury seemed almost impossible with a Toss Wand. It was still tough but noticeably better with the soft fid from D-Splicer. I wish I had a way to make the final bury easier. I am working on it a little at a time to spread...
When doing an eye splice in polyester double braid which do you do first? Re-insert cover or reinsert core? I started out using Samson instructions which advised cover first. Then I got Nick Arya’s splicing series from TreeStuff which is opposite so I did that for a while. I think Brian Toss...
Our Indianapolis house was built in 1943. It has some kind of hardwood parquet everywhere except the kitchen. When we bought it around 35 years ago it was completely covered in deep shag carpet. We have gradually removed all the carpet. We never got around to removing the flat head nails or...
I went all out and ordered all three sizes. There was some kind of supply chain delay and no one in US seemed to have them. They finally arrived this week after about 7 weeks!
I found one on Amazon I thought might come sooner but instead they shipped me a wire fid from the same company. It was...
I found a cheat sheet for whipping twine diameters. They are sold by a mysterious measurement. It turns out the number 15 whipping twine I have is close to 1.2mm and by golly, it looks close to my Toss medium snare. Twine Size Chart # to Metric to Imperial -...
Haha, yes anything possible if you need it. I found an old post in Treehouse. Somebody selling 0.8 spectra for the small wand. I had some 0.8 polyester and installed it no problem. The medium and arborist wands (same diameter) take a larger line. I think it might be 1.1 or 1.2mm. It’s hard to...
It’s smaller than throwline. I saw somewhere that Spectra kite line is essentially the same as Toss used. Some kind of braided Spectra fishing line might also be similar. I actually have plenty of polyester braided sewing thread that’s the correct thickness. Not as strong but probably strong...
I tried Tachyon again this morning. As Rebecca Seibel (Tree Spirit Consultjng) teaches: “75% of the solution is understanding the problem.” Trying to explain to you all last night I realized I was unclear. Kyle helped me focus on *where* I got stuck and I realized that it was partially how I...
