Eastern Sierra and Bodie

The East Sierra escarpment juts straight up out of the Owens Valley to the west, and to the east the White Mountains do the same. Rising to over 14,000 feet. There's no foot hills, so to speak. It's steep, dry and rugged. With the thunderheads ever-present it wasn't as hot as it sure could have been. So that made it nice for us Coasties. And again, the clouds made for some nice landscapes and panoramas.

We covered a lot of ground in the few days we spent there. East of Bishop we toured the Buttermilk Road. Cool rocks and four-wheeling there. We got so far up I wondered if we were going to make it back. Straddling washouts and going over big boulders.

There were more lakes up there than I ever knew about. Convict Lake was the most beautiful of all, I think.

The geology of the region is wild mix of volcanism and metamorphic formation. Makes for highly varied colors in the rocks.

On the way back to the coast we veered off the highway to go see Bodie. An old ghost town. Amazingly intact most of it. It was said they mined over 100 million in gold before it shutdown. If you've never been to Bodie I highly recommend it.

Enjoy!

I love going to that part of California. The contrast to the coast landscape is simply fantastic.
It is some of my most favourite landscape and you've captured it really well.

It is a lot like Silver city up in Owyhee, Idaho.

Great photos, Jerry. The scenery makes an impression, the mood to it, like everywhere that you photograph. Thanks for posting.

I am sure there is plenty of Gold in them thar hills. Excellent trip Ger. I take it the shots have helped? Keep up the good work.

I really like the look of that High desert country.

Awesome pics. I will have to leave my little world sometime and see some of these things.

You've got some nice country up your way, too.
The area up around Lolo and the Bitterroot is fantastic in late spring/early summer when the bear grass blooms.

Bodie is a full on State Park now, and there is a $10.00 fee to enter it. And there's more than one Ranger on the prowl.

The whole eastern Sierra is way cool. We just touched on all the places there to see. So we plan on going there again next Spring. Or as soon as Tioga is open.

Nice Jerry! love the pics
395 is awesome, been on it a lot, lots of high alpine lakes and big jeffrey pines ;) BOTS like!
