Just back a day ago from three weeks on what turned out to be a circumnavigation of Nevada backcountry...of which there is quite a lot :).

Three days from home to get to our first and primary destination...Great Basin NP. Very lightly visited, mostly because it is way the eff out there on the central NV/UT borderlands...a long way from anywhere.

This is one of those innumerable small isolated mountain chain islands within the high desert that is the western US Great Basin. Peaks over 13,000 feet. Our campground was at 10,000 feet.

We had a stretch of real nice weather, 70's day time and 40's nights. Then a stretch of cool and damp, 50's daytime, upper 20's nights, thundershowers with hail, snow up high. Loved it all.

Hikes to see bristlecone pines was a real highlight. Aspens changing to fall colors were beautiful.

Pictures. No particular order :).

Stephen, you are right; I am...we are. Worked hard to get here, sure...but lots of folks work hard. I've had great luck with having good health, luck with money management decisions, luck with choice of life partner.

We decided to run south a couple of hundred miles and camped several days at Cathedral Gorge State Park. Lucked into an annual event there...a dutch oven cook-off! Lots of fun, and great food to sample...plenty for a big dinner! Slot canyons, crazy erosion features...reminded us some of Bryce Canyon NP.

More pics.

Love the scenery, couldn't hack the camping anymore though. Used to love it but my back needs my bed. What sleep mat do you use B??

Paul, when we're car camping, either in the tent (+80% of the time) or in the micro truck camper, we sleep on a double mattress system...our backpacking Thermarest pads layered over a pair of side by side 3 inch open cell foam mats. The Thermarests are a lightweight version, 1.5 inch thick. Pretty damn cush, and as comfortable as our at home bed.

Backpacking, it's just the Thermarests. I usually sleep just fine on them, too.

If the weather is cold and wet, my hip (the one I did not have replaced :)), can bitch at me under either mattress setup.

Great adventure there Burn!!..luv the pics ;)

Ive never heard of that area before, but now if I get a chance, I want to explore that region hopefully before retirement

I knew it...more crowded next time I'm down that way. That'll teach me to keep quiet.

Another magic place, though this one is on many a radar screen, as it is only an hour NE of Las Vegas. Valley of Fire State Park. Absolutely stunning drop your jaw beautiful scenery. My pictures don't even begin to convey the deep rich red colors.

Thanks for the pictures, probably the only way to see some places we'll never get to.
Looks like you have your camping kit sorted really well. Plenty of comfort back at the tent :)

PS, love that picture of the lizard

Awesome country and great pictures! It's hard to believe Nevada has such beautiful country. Well kept secrets surrounded by deserts must keep most of the people away.
