Excellent poem, Bermy!!!! Thank you for posting that.

Chris, killer stuff, right on!8)

Here's one I composed a few years ago. I was on an online dating service and a girl asked if any of the guys were into poetry, so I wrote this for her:

Unreality

I dream of a girl I don’t even know
I see her as if through a haze
Her face is surrounded by a soft warm glow
And her smile puts me into a daze

We stroll hand in hand through the towering trees
We giggle and laugh as we walk
And though I am nervous she puts me at ease
With her charm and her wit and her talk

Our romance is blooming like flowers in spring
And our hearts are beating in time
The song of the birds is so sweet as they sing
While our thoughts blend together in rhyme

The scent of the air fills my head with delight
And the touch of her hand gives me chills
As she looks in my eyes I feel high as a kite
I’ve waited so long for these thrills

The day ends so quickly how can it be so
It seems like we’ve only just met
I fall to my knees I can’t let her go
And she whispers so softly, Not yet

I awake with a start alone in my bed
And realize things aren’t what they seem
As the thought of her smile fades from my head
Once again she’s only a dream

This one could go in the "Songs I Like" thread. An old favorite of mine.

"THE TREES"

There is unrest in the forest
There is trouble with the trees
For the maples want more sunlight
And the oaks ignore their pleas

The trouble with the maples
(and they’re quite convinced they’re right)
They say the oaks are just too lofty
And they grab up all the light
But the oaks can’t help their feelings
If they like the way they’re made
And they wonder why the maples
Can’t be happy in their shade?

There is trouble in the forest
And the creatures all have fled
As the maples scream `Oppression! `
And the oaks, just shake their heads

So the maples formed a union
And demanded equal rights
The oaks are just too greedy
We will make them give us light
Now there’s no more oak oppression
For they passed a noble law
And the trees are all kept equal
By hatchet,
Axe,
And saw ...

Why the Willow Weeps

On a hill there's a willow, it's boughs how thy weep
so many sad things in it's memory it keeps
from four hundred seasons watching over the earth
and all mankind's sorrows it's seen since its birth

One hundred long years of observing mankind
Watching him get this old world in a bind
There's no understanding the values men keep
That's why the old willow weeps

While you are working your regular day
Have a kind thought for those who have no place to stay
But a box made of cardboard on a bone chilling night
And no way to climb from despair within sight

While you are wondering on your own way
Shed a tear for the children who go to their graves
because of starvation or beatings so bad
that they'll miss a lifetime of love to be had

Alone in old age is spent many a year
so many old folks homes are filled with the tears
And the desperate cries of "please don't forsake me!"
To the friends and the families out wondering free

On a dimly lit street, in a small village square
A young girl is murdered while folks stand and stare
Her life drains away where the bullet has torn
He's killed his own child, her baby unborn

On a Hill there's a Willow, it's boughs how they weep
so many sad things in it's memory it keeps
There's no understanding the values men keep
That's why the old willow weeps

I ended up putting this to music...

I wrote this shortly after my wife died in a car accident in 2004. Writing was a sort of therapy for me at the time.

The Closet

I keep the door closed
It's haunted, you know
Full of ghosts

There's the red dress I bought her
before we were married
And the old t-shirt
and baggy shorts
she wore while gardening

It's haunted, you know
Full of ghosts
So I keep the door closed

Her wedding gown hangs
like a frozen waterfall
waiting for spring
Sunday best, casual wear, work clothes
all in their proper places
There sits the last in a long lineage
of tennis shoes
that always wore out in the same spot
near her right toe
Old sneakers, high heels, hiking boots
lined up in formation on the floor
patiently awaiting their next assignment

It's haunted, you know
Full of ghosts
So I keep the door closed

The love letters occupy a special basket
up on the shelf
The paper trail of a long distance relationship
that blossomed like wildflowers in a country meadow
Her intense love for me shines forth
from every tear-stained page
And my feeble attempts to reciprocate that love
pale in comparison, like a candle in dazzling sunshine

It's haunted, you know
Full of ghosts
So I keep the door closed

The photos are there too
Half a lifetime of memories
captured in living color
Family reunions, vacations, children and pets
The life we shared, together
It's all in there
Sometimes I hate that closet

It's haunted, you know
Full of ghosts
So I keep the door closed

I love our chipper

So strong, yellow, trouble free

It saves massive work.

A woodpile with no mouse nests?

Spiders live there too.

Great poem, Tommy B. What part is in your tattoo?

Ray, would you post one of your mothers poems? I've not read many poems written by women.

Great snippets from Lawrence and Frost, Cory.

Sorry. Missed this first time round. I studied this poem in school and fell in love with it. My favourite teacher in school taught the lesson and I just liked every thing about it. I loved the idea that he just wanted to be left alone and between the grass and the vaulted sky, he'd be fine just chilling out.

Got it tattooed and found out a few years back that my favourite teacher passed away so it's a nice little reminder every time I look at it.

Desiderata

"Go placidly amid the noise and the haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence. As far as possible, without surrender, be on good terms with all persons.

Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even to the dull and the ignorant; they too have their story.

Avoid loud and aggressive persons; they are vexatious to the spirit. If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain or bitter, for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.

Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Keep interested in your own career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.

Exercise caution in your business affairs, for the world is full of trickery. But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals, and everywhere life is full of heroism.

Be yourself. Especially do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love; for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment, it is as perennial as the grass.

Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth.

Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.

Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here.

And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should. Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be. And whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life, keep peace in your soul. With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be cheerful. Strive to be happy."

I love this. My parents used to have this framed and on the wall. Because I need reminding of both points, I have "Go Placidly" and " Strive to be Happy" tatted on me

Nice one Tommy. I need to read something like that everyday.

Since Butch has gone
This place ain't the same
The petty fights
Are getting quite lame

Agree to disagree
And give it a rest
Nobody cares
Who thinks they're the best

Just Be Nice!
