Good Morning, folks.

The North Dakota Urban and Community Forestry Association (NDUCFA) is planning to hold a tree pruning class on July 15th and 16th here in Cando, North Dakota.

Day 1 will consist of 4 hours of classroom training plus additional time for Q&A. We'll be presenting several slideshows by Dr. Edward Gilman.

Topics for discussion will include pruning and training young trees, as well as working with mature trees doing reduction pruning, thinning, restoration, and raising. Topping of trees will be discussed and a slideshow presentation on this subject will show the negative results of this type of pruning, as well as lions tailing.

A brief amount of time will be spent on Espalier and Copicing techniques.

The tools of the trade will be on display, to include various hand-held pruners, pole saws, hand saws, and chainsaws. We'll have a brief presentation on the proper use of these tools, as well as how to decide which tool to use.

Day 2 will consist of 6 hours of hands-on training at the local Catholic Cemetery, located 1/4 mile east of Cando. Participants are expected to provide their own personal protective equipment, to include eye protection, suitable footwear, hard hats, gloves, ear protection, insect repellent, and sun screen.

Lunch and refreshments will be provided for all attendees. We'll be providing portable toilets and a trash can on site. The site must be left clean and presentable when departing.

The hands-on portion of the training will take place at the cemetery. The attendees will be split into small groups. A qualified instructor will be assigned to each group. Each group will rotate to different pruning stations during the class. A brief climbing and rigging class will be presented, primarily to educate the attendees on pruning safety when working with larger branches.

We have plenty of room for additional instructors. If anyone would like to participate, we'd greatly appreciate your help.

All tree debris will be cleaned up afterward by Family Tree and Landscaping (That's me). Participants are not expected to clean up any tree debris created by this pruning class. I will handle the clean-up duties entirely on my own time......primarily due to safety and liability issues regarding chipper and heavy equipment operations.

We look forward to hosting this class. More information will be available in the coming days. Motel rooms are available here in Cando for those who wish to stay the night here in town. We have a casino at Devils Lake, as well as some of the nation's greatest fishing on Devils Lake. Plan to make a weekend of it.

Thanks.

Joel
