Do yous remember Gord ?

The last time I heard from him he had a couple of kids and not long since got his certified fallers ticket. That was over 3 years ago now.

I wouldn't put him much past early thirties even, yet you'd be hard pressed to find a guy looking so at ease in a big trees.

This is a one of my favorite vids ever. No theatrics, just a guy going about his job to great effect.

He's good. I was impressed by this one as well, is he a member here?

He was around for awhile. Super talented, real humble and mellow dude. His cousin used to work for my local municipality as a arborist and I met Gord briefly once at a conference.

Haven't seen him post on TB in years. He was there last year, though.

Good contributor. Skilled treeman.

And iirc, he started climbing not long before he posted many of the vids and pics.

I remember some amazing pics he posted of doing cutting for some kind of energy plant iirc, and grizzlies were roaming in the work area.

Edit: Doh! I see now that is the vid Reg posted.

Dbl edit: Maybe not. The title and opening scenes looked like it anyway. Some serious scenery back in there.

I agree, Pete, verrrry smooth.

Cool vid. Lotta hard, skilled work going on there. He loves his sap guards.

Yessir, Gord had my admiration for his way in a tree and with a saw right off the bat. Hope all is well with him, and wish he'd drop in again. We can always use that sort of ability here.

Out of curiosity, in the "Cutting down old fir" video at the top of this page it seems like the large limb he cuts off collects his rope some. Am I wrong? Right around 2:00. Is that common? It seems like it could've gotten real bad if it had actually caught the rope instead of sliding down it.

Limbs snagging your rope on the way down is very common and an easy way to avoid that is to coil it up and hang it off of your saddle while cutting. It's not very common practice but IMO it should be. A very wise tree man Jerry B. has that outlined in some of his videos and is a tip I wish I saw more of in the field.

That could be seriously bad if it happens.

I tend to carry a bagged rope. A bit more weight. So much less work for the ground-crew, and without the risk of an accelerating object rapidly decelerating.

I generally prefer to route my rope outta the way. Doesn't take much to drop it through a crotch or over a sprout most times

I am sure Gord weighed the risk since the rope was off to the side of the intended fall. Just the tips followed the rope. But shat can happen. Been sporting a bag of late. Bought some Bob bags (mesh) and love them. So much easier to tend a rope that is just not in the way. Less chance of the chipper issue as well.

Reading the above posts made realise there could be some room for an invention to manage your excess rope - similar to that retractable lanyard, possibly mounted on webbing (shoulder ?)straps. It may have limited application but still be useful when needed. Any inventors in the house ? ;)

here ya go!
