Bird Watching!

I wake up at night and think about dung beetles, they are great!

Last year I visited with an etymologist about that very same idea Cory, that dung beetles navigate by the stars.

He confirmed it. Very interesting fellow, Hayes Goosey.

Incidentally, plantain is thought to provide cows with a natural way to control internal parasites. Plantain is grown in cover crop mixes for that purpose.

Chemicals like Ivermectin kill dung beetles, if applied to cattle at the wrong time.

I think an etymologist would have been rather confused about your questions!

I saw on a David Attenborough thing about dung beetles and star navigation a few years back, mind blowing!

The article was cool the way it described the grebes surviving the incredible rain storms. I often think of the same thing when cold rain is pelting down and I'm warm and dry under my asphalt shingles, the way the critters are dealing with it.

Ive posted this before, but;

Self-Pity

I never saw a wild thing
sorry for itself.
A small bird will drop frozen dead from a bough
without ever having felt sorry for itself.

That's cuz an animal has no sense of that.

It's not a matter of staying strong and persevering...

That's a human trait.

I use an app called Merlin Bird ID from Cornell Labs, even has bird calls and songs. When the squirrels come up on the deck I'll play a red hawk call. It's fun to watch'em evaporate.

Cool thread! Here's a couple old ones I just dug up. Baby woodpeckers, a bard owl and a couple baby great horned owls.

So we had a visitor at our job site today. We were burning a ton of brush, which usually flushes out game for the raptors. In fact, this property and a couple others, they have us and the HOs pegged as food source flusher outers.
I was less than 15 feet under this one. Let me walk up and walk all the way around him.
