Thanks, Jed. I don't know if I would part with that bar. It reminds that it is possible to have the bread to actually buy one. :)

Jack, never heard of the newspaper with the glue, but white or yellow glue is something that I have used myself. With a couple applications you can have a thick coating. I wonder if your friend prefers the glue and paper over the commercially available sealers, or it is more a matter of cost?

Thanks guys on the vid. Yes, it's the priest of the temple there offering prayers. I like when they have a little ceremony, it feels kind of right, also because often a cup of sake for everyone goes along with it, and it's a nice pepper upper on cold mornings. We run into that pretty regular...

I like the trip cuts down at an angle because I find that it is easier to release the tree without the saw getting stuck. Easier to match up cuts too. I was pretty hesitant to use the method when the crane operator first showed it to me, thought it was a waste of time. It has become pretty...

Speaking about risks or not, what started out as a job with a lot of concern, ended up pretty much just being another crane aided removal, lacking in excitement...... The cut is the usual punch through, then trip it from the outside, that I like for crane picks. The operator had a lot of lift...

Yes Jack. I'm working on the video. Craned it out after taking off the top and down to sound wood.

Thanks for the perspective, Jerry, Topping the tree is an option, and when the crane operator was out to have a look, we decided to do that to help ensure it not getting hung up if falling it and to reduce the weight. I do like the idea of leaving it on to help possibly soften the crash, as...

"No more helping me in your shop anymore, or cutting trees for my son-in-law", some possibilities. I wouldn't want to break his goods, but that isn't my biggest concern.

Yes, I was wondering if Jerry has ever had to tie the butt of those big trees he has fallen? Some of the large boats that were washed inland during the tsunami, some Very large boats, I see that when lifting them up with a crane(s) they are often using some super strong appearing slings, I...

Don't misunderstand, Fiona, i much appreciate your input. Just saying that the suggestions are gratefully received and I think and try to mentally apply about each and every one, but still questions remain for me at this point. :) A mistake still looms big, that's all.

Fiona, I called up an old friend of mine, a retired crane operator, and described the situation with questions pertaining to the capacity of a 25 ton. "Have to see it". I can't get no relief.

    Butt tying or....?

Yes, I get the idea of wanting the tree to be moving forward as much as possible when it leaves the stump, a derivative of how the cuts are made and what is happening to possibly encumber the fall. That's the thing partly with this job, how you win in one way is how you lose in another. There...

Thanks for the vote of confidence. With the top left on, it is going to make contact with some other trees, but with the two ton puller hooked up high, I don't really see the problem with that like I did initially. If it gets hung up, it should be able to be pulled off easily enough in theory...

    Butt tying or....?

I've been kind of picturing that. I'm having a hard time locating some rope or other material that will assuredly withstand a potential breaking load, without running into some major expense. Since I have a bull rope rated to slightly over six tons, so how best to try and multiply that with...

If you guys wanted to attach a rope to a tree that was likely going to be heavy shock loaded, and wanted to least reduce the rope strength, what method would you use? I was thinking a timber hitch with a lot of wraps around the standing part, and with enough rope to go back and forth as much as...

Dave, I posted (below) before seeing yours, i believe thinking along similar lines about the weight factor and crane position. Good thoughts you have too, about the general take on this job...thanks. Andy, I haven't ever seen a tree lowered that way before, attached to the hinge as long as is...

Great idea! Perhaps the snow will be a lot higher by then too. It's looking very possible with the winter we are having.

The last time I had to anchor against a tree with a heavy duty puller, I used an old wool blanket folded over a bunch of times under the wrap. Those posts with the blanket seems like it would work good. Cool post, Deva. Your thoughts about the rope breaking based on experience, seems like...
