You know what the hard part in that exercise is? Being the stand up guy/girl when the guy on the ground is a beginner. They just pull you over.

Gary is still lean, so Am I. We are both older guys. I weigh the same as when I was 25. Something else is that right now 1 5 year old girl could probably beat me up. I'm having some bad problems with the chemo.

Probably not. He'd have an idea about what to do, and some muscle memory to help with that. But Run completely out of steam after 30 seconds.

The Isshinryu organization I belong to has recently joined the W.U.I.K.A. An American branch of Isshinryu. Never seen so many fat out of shape really high ranked guys before. Talking 9-10 Dan guys who can hardly move. See if this link works...

Really nice to see an older, high ranked American karate sensei who is actually in fighting shape.

If you dropped a bowling ball on that stack, the result would be the same. 90% pancake IMO.

It sure took me a lot longer. I had trained karate fanatically for a little over 20 years before I became a blackbelt. Partly because I didn't care for getting one and partly because I refused to do all the bullshit one was subjected to in order to get permission to try out for it. Finally I...

10-12 year old kids with black belts are the reason, I'd prefer not to wear mine. It has lost all meaning and been turned into a bad joke.

I was thinking about Gary. I don't beat up on ( other) old men;)

Absolutely, Jay. That is why I say it is all about timing. If you try a high kick just like that, you'll most likely get punched in the face or swept. Move in with a couple of hard punches to the face and when the opponent is occupied with those, whack him on the ear with a kick. I could show...

I guess I'm a dancer! I'd say offhand that about 80% of the knockouts I've scored have been with a Mawashi geri ( roundhouse kick?) to the head. It is simply a question of timing. Any tecnique that you truly master, you should be able to deliver without conscious thought. When the opening...

Unless you are REALLY good at it, but few are. I think you are pressing yourself too hard on the high kicks. At your age you can't expect the hipjoints to get more flexible unless you ease them into it over a long period. Old guys who are really flexible and can kick high, like myself, have...

Absolutely. Pin a fellow with both shoulders touching the mat and you win a price. Very combat like ! Like I said, there are good reasons why the asian styles have taken over.

Absolutely, but to my mind there is several good reasons for why they went extinct and the eastern arts filled the gap. One being that we developed good guns, instead of sticking with an outdated matchlock gun, like the Japanese. Also, I was being sarcastic:D

What others? The noble art of self defense according to the Queensbury rules ( sorry for any spelling errors, I ad-libbed that one!)

That is good. I was 45 when I started groundfighting, and while locks, throws and the whole kick and punch thing is second nature to me, having to learn a whole new concept was really hard. Would have been way easier 20 years ago. While I can fight quite well on the ground today, There is no...

At your age ( sorry, but you are a late starter to martial arts) I'd go for something simple, with few tecniques, but high intensity. That way you won't be eaten up by frustrations about having a hard time mastering stuff, but get a great workout instead.

Don't worry, Steve. With probably several hundred different karate styles or more by now, a blanket statement like that has a more than fair chance of being right. I think you'd like what I do, though. No sports karate, no competitions, only focus is on self defense and the only rule when...
