    I always ran it with my toe on the pivot foot to steady it.

    Maple is really the only one that gives us grief. As to that picture with the guarding, I see you regrinding chips which robs power from the task at hand. I'd rather rake grindings back than have that small a work space.

    Get thinner plywood. 3/8 is plenty thick. You can put some pvc on it vertically for soft ground, hammer a stake through it for hold or wind.
