I've seen large roots pull out on a side leaning mulberry.... not a very big tree so not particularly dangerous, but it did provide a valuable lesson of what can go wrong (and bent up a cyclone fence)... I think its one of the advantages of age in this business... If you;re around long enough...

I have made a study of the stumps around here and taken lots of pictures of these ugly stumps, but never organized it..

Certainly didn;t mean to imply that I can take trees down that 99% of arbs can't... If such a tree exists I haven't seen it.. what I meant was that I will notch and drop a tree that would have otherwise been climbed and roped out, or crane removal etc... And I wouldn't generalize about the...

not around here they didn't... I've been grinding stumps and get to see a lot of ugly notches and back cuts... rarely see good hinge fiber

I get it, the purity and tradition of one man, his saw, ax (hammer) and wedges.... you can call me lazy, call the skid loader a crutch, call the open face a wussie notch., and you wouldn't be that far off... pounding wedges can make you break a sweat and suck air.... a wave of the hand is soo...

Just think of the value you could ad as a sub by putting a little trailer with a skid steer or mini on the back of the bucket truck! That would probably make a big chunk of change over the cost of payments on a new machine....

I stood at the stump to tease the hinge as this thing was going... but that is much more of an exception than a rule for me... I AM operating on a different paradigm that would not be possible without a high pull line tied to a truck or skid steer.... I stood at the stump for years ... know...

Here's a private video from a while back. pertinent here. please do not share or post links, this is for the house only.. thanks.. TYhought August might enjoy and must give him credit for he turned me on to the phrase "compensation pull", when we were discussing the merits of its use <iframe...

And if you're not lanyarded in below the cut, then its fine to rip down the trunk... only unforseen consequence is that the top is going to land out farther away from the tree, which can be an issue in a particularly tight drop zone... I've thought about using this phenomenon to jump tops but...

Passionless... ????????????????? Sometimes yes (which is just fine by me) and sometimes not so much. PLenty of heart pounding falls around here.. Maybe like the difference between POV and wide angle..... POV is cool, but you get a different and often more complete perspective from wide...

On straight grain the tendency is to split down, rather than BBC, which can easily kill a climber using a lanyard below the cut... If you're at a crotch or the stump the path of least resistance is to split the trunk up..

Actually its pretty dern fective.. (can't slide to one side without the grains twisting or tearing and very unlikely to break off a piece of sound wood at the bottom of the BBC back half, its almost certain to just stall on the backstop long enough to finish the cut)) .. though maybe not full...

no... you heard it first right here.... Saw it with my own two eyes and after all its only common sense physics... thakn about it... on an upright the stem has to split and the back half has to go back before it goes up ... If there is a back stop there, the stem will crack, but it won;t ba...

A buddy of mine tells a story about taking out a big heavy (front) leaning silver maple top, something over 26-30" from memory.... The thing BBCed on him and he was just barely able to push off and out of the way as the but came flying down over him.... He would have been dead if he lanyarded...

That's what's called self aware assholishness... and many Wayne Dyer (RIP) books say it's the first step in becoming a half decent guy... There may be hope for us after all!
