    My father's axe

I like axes anyway. I switched to using one for work almost 30 years ago. 95% of the time it's just a hammer, but when you need a blade, it's a real time saver. It's not sharp, but it does a fine job chopping roots, scraping pavement, prying rocks out of the ground, and being an improvised...

    My father's axe

Got an email from Helko advertising their Ironwood line of boutique axes. Looks like many are already sold out. These things are very pretty. I think you'd maybe buy one as a work of art, and not to use, but I guess if you're rich, you could use it, and buy another later. IMO, their regular axes...

    My father's axe

Fallers axe. I think that's a good name. A felling axe is primarily for chopping, while a fallers axe is primarily for banging.

I have not. Do redwoods cut pretty easily? Even if it's a gravy tree to cut, the size is pretty intimidating. That's a lot of big chips to get a face in.

    My father's axe

A 'felling axe' brings to mind working with a crosscut saw. Dunno what you'd call a modern wedge banger. Anyone know how long it took to fell a redwood with an axe and crosscut? Get the gunning cut in with the saw, and you're on the axe team. Chop! a little chip flies out. Chop! there goes...

I call them Euro or German pattern, but I don't know what they're really called.

    My father's axe

No cops are gonna showup if you use an 'unapproved' handle. You might find you like something different than standard. I use short handled tools for just about everything, most extreme being my splitting maul. It's about 18" total length. I wouldn't mind a couple extra inches, but it's fine. You...

    My father's axe

I could buy that. I'm looking at the One Moving Part page, and it seems to be pretty close. I think I've seen more thorough lists though, but I'm not sure where. It might be on my computer somewhere, or one of my computers anyway. I'll have to poke around.

    My father's axe

I think this is the best pic I have of it... I dug it out of the ground ~20 years ago. Can't find any markings on it. Note, the blade has been reprofiled from scraping pavement. It's straighter than as-shipped I'm sure. Found in MD.

    My father's axe

I've looked at the pattern charts, and some of them look virtually identical. It's like they gave every subtle change it's own name. I still don't know what my work axe is. I gave up trying to figure it out.

Purty! If I had to guess, I'd expect the measurement to from the bottom of the head to the end of the handle, but I don't know what the official standard is. I don't have any new handles here to check. edit: If that doesn't work for you, you might want to try something like the fiskars X25...
