Pure, awesome beauty. That looks like a lot of the trees you see in Prairie Creek. Cathedrals

If a spark ever blew under those loose sheets of bark the rotten sapwood would start burning under it and be almost impossible to put out. It would change the looks of the tree like we have never seen it before. Well, there are plenty of other examples around that we see today. Too bad trees...

"Colossus" is the name I give that tree. To meet grade requirements, when building the highway through the park, the root crown on this side of the tree was cut. Oh, 100 years ago, give or take a few. Today, the bark on this side of Colossus is just barely hanging on. Nice pic, Mario. In...

More to worry about mountain lions. There was an attack about 10 years ago in Prairie Creek. Old fellow got it bad. would be dead if not for his wife clubbing the thing with a limb. As a kid growing up in those woods I worried needlessly about Big Foot. No worry though.

You can't get lost for very long in that park before you cross another trail. The ground and the brush will take its toll though.

About a half mile in that trail turns to a real bog, and the trees are not near as big as the ones at the beginning. But, if you slog through you will come out on the James Irvine Trail near where the Clintonia trail ties in. It's all good, really.

Yeah, that's a nice one, too, Mario. Pullouts along highway 199 are scant and few, and in-between pullouts there's barely any shoulder to stand on that can provide a sense of safety from getting run over. There's so many places I wanted to stop and take pictures over the years, but just too...

She's a beauty, Mario! Though there sure were a lot more ferns around the tree back then. August 2008. Terri and I went back a couple times in the years since, and noticed the wear and tear mounting. Shame. I think the impacts are greater from the groups that go there more over the lone...
