    Redwood Fall 10-30-11

You're all welcome! And again thank you, Chris. Still hard to fathom 7 years have passed since that episode. I took those images with a Sony F828. For only 8 MP they turned out alright.

Get the wax out of your ears! The guy doing pulling. The man on the Cat. I got to say, most pull trees that went wrong was by that link in the chain. They freak out, don't pull when they are told to pull, just stop pulling for some weird reason, or they just let her go to smithereens...

One weak link and the best plan fails, and often that weak link is communication.

2011? Wow! I'm getting old and senile. I forgot all about that one. Thanks for the bump, Chris! You asked about the toughest tree to rig? If we had all the rigging needed to pull a tree properly things usually went pretty smooth, but a lot of loggers, during the latter years in the...

Heck, you're up earlier than me, Jay. For sure get the bark off. I suspect they will probably peel them logs by hand.

The 90 blubbered and smoked. Ugh... It worked but.... Here's the push/pull images of getting the second and third cuts to the landing.

It does a take a team to pull up the rigging. I just came home from the skidding. Push/pull with two cats to get the first three cuts to the landing. I'll post pics in a little while. In the morning the low bed is coming to get loaded. I hope I can make it for that. But tomorrow is going...

They rigged that tree a little over 100 feet with a inch and quarter choker, shackled it to a bull line of the same. With the tail hold block up the hill even with the rigging point. Pretty positive pull. Not much stretch with that heavy wire rope. They took the slack out of the rigging and...

On a real pull tree you always set tension in the line to hold the weight of the lean. After sawing the face it's normal to tighten up on the tree prior to starting the back cut. Not a lot though. Some people tend to over tighten the rigging. Sure clue of that is having the tree set down...

Pull tree. That pretty much says it all. No lay for the tree,, except to pull it to one. The old timers left them. Still a lot around actually, scattered here and there in all the second growth. The land that job is on has 30 or 40 over about 300 acres. Mostly smaller, but a few bigger...

Jay, the story of the tree was in the air some months ago. all local rumors. My camera and I just happened to show up because I got a phone call the night before it happened. Oh, with all the issues about cutting old growth today I see it all in a much different perspective than when I was...

I'm surprised some criticism's have yet been posted. I have some feelings about it all. Romantic and practical feelings,,, for the most part. I can't help that. It's where I come from. The pull was well planned, Willy. Losing the tree was not likely. I hear the logs will be loaded on a...

When the big trees fall in the parks during storms, across roads and trails, the park service hires some private individuals with the saws and the know-how to buck the trees so they can be managed. I have a collection of photos of just such trees and bucks. Who ever does it is right on the...

Rates today are pretty low, Carl. Logger is only getting about .15 per bf. Land owner you can figure about a $1, camp run. And the mill will triple that between the clear logs and knotty top logs. This has typically been the breakdown for old growth over the last 10 years.

Just guessing 250. It was taller than the layout.

I figured out how to post the pics in order. It's not so hard. After uploading just drag the icons where they should go and the others move out of the way. Of course I did start my numbering from 0001. So it was easy to keep track of the order.
