What, the yellowwood? It's in the pea family! Must be the giant beanstalk!

Goldenraintree Too bad I didn't get it when it was flowering, but here's the KS state champion goldenraintree, right beside a fraternity on the University campus: Meanwhile, this one by the historic Castle Tea Room is still in full, beautiful bloom. Interesting how they flower at totally...

Callery Pear Not sure if this is a Bradford cultivar or a true Callery, but it is impressive to see one this big that hasn't failed. I expect that is due to its location, sheltered by the KU student union and the natural history museum. But I'm sure all the current site work will not help its...

American Basswood / Linden We haven't had any opportunities to work on a true American Basswood / Linden before here in KS (I have pruned a Littleleaf Linden and done a removal on another Littleleaf recently). I like Lindens a lot; they might be my favorite deciduous tree. This one is also on...

Osage Orange Pretty awesome Osage, easy to climb, also on the University campus. Little Forest Keepers took off some suckers. You know a tree is pretty impressive when it eclipses your 16' tape measure -- had to add a 2nd tape measure to confirm the 19' circumference!

Largest Pin Oak in Kansas Located on the University of Kansas campus here in Lawrence, KS. Trunk is every bit of my 16' tape measure. I did do a bit of lower deadwooding on it with a pull rope.

Comparable seed size to a Bradford, but I think less mess and staining to sidewalks. Where we are recommending, there are for sure no issues (back yard shade, will not grow toward structures). And yes, for sure less mess than a Bradford: Edit: Today we did have to take down a Linden. It had...

Especially when the climbers are the size they are ;) We are recommending to all our customers who have Bradford Pear issues and any Ash removals to consider Lindens as a great, hardy replacement. They do well here, have a pleasing shape, and stay a manageable size.

KS Champion Linden Yes, we deadwooded this one today (it's in a city park) -- me & my little crew of climbers :)

Maybe a sucker or two... :) I didn't want to take too many liberties, esp. as the Rock Elm is on the University of Kansas campus and the hickory is in a Catholic cemetery -- want to be respectful of the setting! We may have an opportunity to work on the Ginkgo I posted, as the house is for sale...

National Champion Rock Elm Had the opportunity to chase down two champions today, between stump grinding jobs. The first one is a national champion, but more likely also the world champion, seeing as how the Rock Elm is a Midwestern-native species. While not huge at only 39 ft. height and a 4'...

Champion Gingko Biloba This must be a state champion, if not a national contender -- there are no listings for a Kansas state champion Gingko on the map I have. 4+' diameter trunk, well over 80 years old, just one mile from our place. Far and away the biggest Gingko I've ever seen -- and it's a...

Largest Pecan in Kansas (208" circumference, 130' tall) Beginning in 1940, the American Forests National Big Tree Program has maintained a national catalog of champion trees. There are currently four in Kansas, and six in Missouri. While some trees are on private land, the ones in this list...
