    Cutting heavy horizontal limbs

I liked having one when I needed to free my hands while a saw was in the cut. Say I needed to adjust my body or reach up and dress the knot on the limb a little better. It was nice not having to put the saw back on my side for fear of it dropping out of the tree.

Does anyone else's saw tether even get chomped up by the chain? Or was that just me? This is the one I used to use. Anyone use one like this or just the bungee style ones?

    Cutting heavy horizontal limbs

For the record, my first climbing saw was smashed on the ground within a week. Ive done it. I don't mean to imply otherwise. My boss had my take down a dead tulip poplar. Not a huge tree, but big enough. I was a nervous wreck. the bark was sliding off and all that. I need to go up 2/3's of the...

Carver, welcome. I screw things up 20 times before I get them right. You seem to understand my point about tying the saw off to the tree. That's spending time and making plans for a bad outcome. My whole point has NOTHING to do with using a breakaway for general tree work. Its a cool tool.

    Cutting heavy horizontal limbs

I wouldn't say they're beyond reproach. They're kind of a very small group of basic cuts. Not really a huge arsenal of cuts I use in a tree. A handful is all Ive ever needed. But I learned early on, what not to do when using those handful of cuts aloft. My saw handling is less then perfect in a...

    Cutting heavy horizontal limbs

I don't remember the last time I pinched a bar in a tree or dulled a chain up there......

    Cutting heavy horizontal limbs

A breakaway lanyard breaks. Meaning it doesn't even keep the saw in the event a great deal of weight pulls down on it. Soooooo, whats the point?

    Cutting heavy horizontal limbs

Pinching a saw or dulling a chain is inconsequential. Improper cutting technique aloft is one way to die or cause property damage.

    Cutting heavy horizontal limbs

I was beating around the bush, but i'll just be straight forward. If you are leashing your saw to something because you are worried about it getting caught in the kerf and going for a ride, you might be better to get out of the tree until you've got your cutting skills refined. I GET THE POINT...

No I understand the purpose of your breakaway. I used to use one.

    Cutting heavy horizontal limbs

Breakaways are cool. But my point why tether it to the tree? If its a breakaway, your saw is going to the ground anyhow. So why attach the saw to the tree knowing you'll be in need of both a new saw and a new breakaway. If it isn't a breakaway but rather some sort of rigid tether, then you enter...

    Cutting heavy horizontal limbs

Why not just not clip the saw to anything. If that saw were to get snatched somehow, the safest bet is to part ways with the saw entirely.

    Cutting heavy horizontal limbs

Yup, just one slice with the saw. No notch.

    Cutting heavy horizontal limbs

Ditto. A notch on the bottom of a heavy large limb is asking for a split if you don't go about it right. Ive done it wrong on a limb that's to be lowered down and watched the limb split. Not funny to watch when that limb is supposed to be lowered down.

    That's quite alright.
