Black isn't bad Cory. Its carbon. Doesn't mean anything bad necessarily. Every chainsaw piston Ive ever seen is black on top. Its like sawdust in the chip truck. its always going to be there.

Pull the spark plug and shine a light in the hole and look at the top of the piston. My saws run on 50 to 1 gas and carbon has never been an issue.

It comes in a red and white can from ANY auto parts store. It dissolves carbon. Ive had gas engine trucks tht would spark knock bad from carbon build up. Ive flooded the engines (risky but doable) thorugh the vacuum hose until the engine stalls. Let it sit and eat the carbon. Start the truck up...

Jay, seafoam. Apply right through the spark plug hole. Let it sit over night. Let it sit on top of the piston for a few hours then flip the saw over so it sits in the dome of chamber, with the plug in. Fire that sucker up and let it blow al the burning carbon out. Top of your piston will show...

My pistons are black on top, but not enough carbon to even scrape off.

Smooth aren't they? They'll trick you in an instant when using the tip of the bar to bore into wood.

Why on earth would you use a saw that big to cut a 6" top out of a tree? That's more of a liability then an advantage.

Cory, don't judge that 372 you have against the old style ones. I haven't touched a new edition 372. My 6 year old one is still running and functioning great. I do believe when it becomes worn, I will spend the money to overhaul it entirely. I got my buddy an old style 372xp new in the box 2...

Im not sure about all these 562 worries? Is this stuff you heard from AS or stuff you have personally dealt with? My 562 has got about a zillion hours on it since last fall and the only thing ive done is tap the air filter out a few times. Mine is actually fading white on top from sun exposure...

Makes sense. Id expect a OE 372 to rule the roost in that comparison. Ive had a pile of 044's, and a pile of old style 372's, and while the 44's were great weapons, the 372s pulled ahead by a bit.

To me, its a waste of time and a poor comparison if the saw is a known lemon that doesn't represent its model well. That's like a racing 2 cars to see which is faster, knowing one has a miss.

We all have our own ways, and our own logo's on the trucks. That's what makes the world go round. On the gaffs, I use a mid size saw when the time comes. Out of a bucket, stand clear and give me a big saw. And pray. Its been years since I worked out of a bucket, but I was naughty when I did...

Ive logged in 20 below. The work wasn't bad because my skidder was heated with a radio, and that job didn't have any hand cutting. The timbco ate that job. Hardest part was machine repairs in the cold and getting everything running in the morning.
