For the 2010 Olympics here in Vancouver the Dutch team brought like 400 bikes over and used them in the athlete's village and between venues etc as freebie loaners, I dont remember how many disappeared.

This is my main beef with road cyclists, one minute they want you to give them a space on the road itself (although they are doing 30km and the posted speed is 60km etc) and treat them as a vehicle the next they are blowing through 4 way stops and going through an intersection on a red light...

for components I think the most important to have in good order is the rear derailleur, it it gets the most abuse. Then brakes and lastly front derailleur. If its going to get lots of riding the wheel hubs can also be upgraded.

the one I put up can be recharged with an air pump or compressor, I carry a tire pump under the bar that will fill it in a relatively short time I figure. Will find out tomorrow if I make it to the store.

hmm, I am thinking of going to the store tomorrow, had a bike bell in mind, they are required by bylaw around here but I found something oh so much more entertaining. :D <iframe title="YouTube video player" width="480" height="390" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/RiJMuSBLxzg" frameborder="0"...

word. except where there are bike lanes, we have them on many major thoroughfares now, an extra meter and a half or so (4 to 6 feet) of shoulder marked on the road.

Thanks, its a mixed bag of Shimano gear, Acera to Deore, my other bike has Deore to XTR components, slightly more rugged.

that's one of my pet peeves, the using the whole car lane then blowing through the red lights. If you want to be respected as a vehicle, drive with the rules of the road.

My current whip is an unknown model Rocky Mountain, my full suspension bike is up in storage, somehow I don't have a pic of it. 1999 Rocky Mountain Spice. In the long run I will be making one bike from the two. Swapping out the better rated gear from one to the other as well as the disc brakes...

I see a few bike riders around here wearing high viz vests etc, I will do the same when/if I ride on the streets again, that and the flashing LED lights front and back, cant be too visible IMHO.

no argument, bike lanes are hard to come by here, and riding on the roadside is treacherous to say the least.

5000 km a year? thats better than 14 km / day. good on you. I am aiming to get on my bike more often in the next year and onwards, 10km / day seems like a decent goal.
