TBH I find the whole thread a bit odd. I just tie a bowline with a hitch to the tow bar, there's equal pressure on the knot on the top of the tree surely?- Mick!

The towel/chaps thing over the wire/rope is a standard practice for winching (at least it was when we did some stuff about it at college)- Mick!

It (as does everything) depends, tirfors are sloooowwww. Pick-ups, loaders etc give you speed of pull, that's a big plus.- Mick!
