That's what Ive started to do in terms of full days, it makes pricing work easier and means you get more opportunity to finish early 8). I wont try to charge a half day for what is substantially less though. The other advantages of the small job market I have found is that it still pushes along...

I bid only hourly where its hard to define scope such as hedge trimming or very difficult access/terrain.
If a customer wanted a discount based on taking less time than they expected I would immediately lose all respect for them...
In my experience consumer markets vary drastically along geographic, cultural and moral boundaries-finding the right customers is difficult but essential to success.
just a comment as I've got no valuable advice:) I'm pretty sure plenty small operators in the tree biz use the most medieval and stoneage formulas that they can come up with...
