    My father's axe

But I bet the laughers are not using a claw hammer instead :P. That's still wrong ;).

No clarity there re which is what for the axe name question. :)

    My father's axe

Maybe as John postulates, a felling axe is for chopping out the face, and a falling axe is for driving wedges and chopping away thick bark. It always has been fuzzy how the two words get used, to me. Are we felling this tree, or falling it? Some people just mix and match as the spirit moves...

    My father's axe

Depends on your definition of felling axe, perhaps. Where I live, a felling axe is the tool you use to drive wedges when you are felling...thus must have a poll.

    My father's axe

I don't really have significant difficulty getting the axe out of the top of the chopping block :). That was hyperbole to emphasize how fast I can accelerate the head of said axe :D.

    I don't understand, Sean.

    My father's axe

When I want to, I can accelerate the snot out of this head, with the 35 inches of handle. Then I have to fight it out of the chopping block :D.

    My father's axe

I happened across a section in the One Moving Part manual that indicates that for splitting, a handle of 42 inches is good, with a 5-and-a-half-pound head hung on it. I have split some maple with this axe, and I think I'll keep it as is. I am having no trouble with accurate swings. It splits...

    My father's axe

That's a generous offer, but you are right, it is a bit of a drive. Thanks, but I reckon I'll pass. Please don't get together with @davidwyby and send me a second splitter, also postage due :D.

    My father's axe

At 5'8", I need something more like 30" or 31" perhaps. I may check out handles from the outfit @stikine has posted a link to in another thread. Or I may just muddle on with the original handle...it is older than me, so it must be somewhat experienced :D. https://www.househandle.com/

    Thanks, both of you.

    My father's axe

I looked at the recommended lengths, how to measure for a proper body fit for chopping. This handle is at least 4 inches too long for me, by those standards. My father was about my size, though somewhat more heavily built in the chest and shoulders. So it would have been long for him, too...

    My father's axe

Uh oh...dare I ask? :D I can just see a hydraulic splitter showing up, postage due :|:. But I'll bite, see your inbox, David.

    My father's axe

Looks like a Rockaway. Some have pointed lugs, according to this... https://www.exploringaxehistory.com/team-1/rockaway Yours is not quite pointed, but not rounded either. Could be a Jersey too, I guess.

    My father's axe

I'll look, and I think I recall that from One Moving Part. Great book, btw. That's how I was able to identify the pattern.

    My father's axe

I coulda/shoulda asked google first :). It says from the top of the head to the end of the handle. So, 35 inches on this axe.

    My father's axe

I've been having some discomfort splitting firewood with my old reliable 6 pound maul, since my arthritis is buggering my hands and wrists up pretty much all the time now. In an effort to find a more comfortable time of splitting, I dug out the axe I inherited from my father when he passed in...
