You could always make something out of it .Worse case being firewood . Oak or at least white oak does well in the elements for something like lawn furniture .Be it ash the stuff will air dry enough that it will work for trim although I don't personally think I'd try to make furnture unless it...

On my way to work I pass what's left of a big dairy barn that got wind blown .Someone evidently is trying to salvage some of the timbers because they are getting piled up on wagons . I've seen this played out before .In spite of good intentions more times than not the salvaged timbers get left...

Well on that some of those old timber framed barns have weathered the test of time and are solid as a rock after 100-120 years .The demise of them was not keeping a good roof on them . They are dropping like flies in these parts because they aren't usefull with todays farming methods . The...

Well more times than not they dumped the stuff in the river and floated it into a pond .It never had a chance to dry out .What they did after it was sawn I have not a clue . However I remember as a young boy at my granddads' mill piles of hardwood with split ends .Evidently granddad didn't do...

Actualy I've found roofing tar to be the best but that's on stuff you cut a cookie off the end before you saw it . If you don't cut a cookie the saw streaks the tar through the lumber . After thought : Some of that ash I cut about 7 years ago and did not seal has splits up to a foot long in it...

I'll tell ya shagbark is as hard or harder than black locust once it's dry . It's the next thing to cutting concrete using a chainsaw . It's beautful wood if used for cabinetry and trim but a little tough to work .

If I'm not mistaken those holes were about a quarter hole out of alignment and the pins either green locust sapling wood or hickory .

That flexability is why those giant old dairy barns held up almost forever with proper care .

Post and beam would last almost forever if the right stuff were used . The old barns that fell down hither and yon would still be standing if they had kept good roofs on them . Granted the wind got a few of them but more fell to just lack of maintainence .

Say on that it seems I had ants galore in the hickory firewood and some type moth in the stickered oak lumber . Now weather it was a good plan or not I shot a bunch of Sevin on it .Antless and mothless in about a day or two .

This subject of timber framing is one I find very interesting .The craft is nearly a lost art in these more modern of times . Those old barns etc built over 150 years ago are still standing if the owners would just have kept a good roof on them . Too bad most did not and in time the weather...

Actually one of those old school tool gurus did show using a sheet of plate glass and 600 grit paper to tune up a plane on TV once . I have some good old Stanleys in one of the drawers of my radial arm saw which I haven't used in years .They do a great job but I seldom use them as I seldom do...
