A picture is worth a thousand words .This is about a 3 1/2 foot dead ash spar 20 foot more or less .Straight even cut about a 1/2" of hinge wood .I'd have cut a higher fall cut but I wasn't the one doing the cutting .
As a suggestion on a stump cut on a spar you're better off to have the back cut come out even with the bottom of the wedge .You don't need a high hinge because you really aren't directing anything to amount to much .
Put about say a third way through the stub with the wedge then back cut and...
Ha most of use were Adonisis in our younger days .Unfortunataly the ravishes of time has caught up with some of us .We were mighty men at one time .-----and for the rest of our lives we will refect upon that place in the sun once upon a time .;)
I've only ever done a couple of those under cuts .That was to toss the tree uphill to keep it out of the river .'tain't all that easy for a flat lander .
I didn't know any better at the time but that could come back to bite you if the tree bounced over the stump and gravity took over .Lucky I...
Joking aside I'd heard before that some of our west coast brethren prefer the long bars simpley because of the slopes . I can only assertain that myself living in land flat as a table top .
I've still got that dead 100 foot oak to trip .I know darned well I could flop it with a 20" but it's just as easy to use something with some grunt with a 32 or 36" right from the get go .
:) Were I to venture a guess that statement would apply to 95 % of the cutting in most cases no matter where it's at .--and of course the word "monster" could be determined as being relevant as well .
I've cut years ago when you had to use auto tranny fluid for bar oil it was so cold .I don't have to do that any more so I don't .This I will say ,that cold the old saw engine runs real good .
I used basically the same method last year when I stumped out a big hickory that was over 5 feet at the root flare .As it was I had nothing of any size because all my large saws have west coast wrap handles .Couldn't get low enough .
So it fell upon a pair of souped up 038's ,a Av and a mag...
Well sorry to bust a bubble but that root spread cut with a short bar isn't done any differently in Denmark than it is in Ohio .
Remember it's a poor sawyer who blames the shortness of his bar, 'tis how you use it that counts .;)
It isn't a big deal to trip a 30" tree with a 14" bar .The problem comes in when you buck it .
You can cut through as much as you can then get medevil with a sledge and steel wedges and bust it apart but Andy isn't up to that swinging a 10 pound hammer I don't think .Finding smaller stuff...
I wasn't joking ,you can get a lot done with a little saw especially if that's all you have .Andy should heal a bit though IMO .
I'm not going to harp on old little saws .I will say though I landed an S-25 for my wifes cousin who has back problems .That one he can handle .I mean 25 bucks and...
