Yeh, on machines, we have had two price increases from stihl over here this year so far. The last was in june and went up 9% alone:O I assume the price increase would go on parts also, but as you say, still not a bad price on this filter.

HD here is around £19 and prefilter £4 inluding tax Think thats around $33 US total.

Got the prefilter from the dealer, but seems to be a delay in getting the HD. Even with the felt sock fitted i feel a bit more confident using the saw now without compromising motor life. The HD should be in sometime next week.

Sure Stephen, i'll give the dealer a ring today and see if its in, im travelling out that way later. Spoken to another mate of mine with a 660 and his also cruds up the same as mine. Think he will get a better set up also. The dealer actually listed the prefilter as a seperate part so perhaps...

What you are all saying sounds logic, i can see very cold temps maybe needing a more open filter, but come on we (over the pond) are hardly in arctic conditions! If stihl for instance found that the only way to run a saw in harsh conditions was to reduce the life of the motor(hard to imagine...

Oh, sorry Butch the pre-filter is an extra on the UK saw but is available. I have one on order:)

Sure Butch, thats the pre-filter. A bit like a sock that slides over and is washable. Here you can actually see the dust stacked up on the deflector, most of this will be relatively harmless to the motor but imagine if it was working in extremely dusty conditions:\:

Here you go, just for reference really but i managed to get the pics to download! This filter has had around 4 tanks of fuel through since last clean out, just mainly cross cutting hardwood. Doesnt look too bad until i removed it; And behind the deflector;:O Just goes to show how naff...

Looks like we have a go on the HD filter:D Our dealer has put the filter and pre-filter on order for me at a total cost of £21.50. I'm well made up, looks like i can keep some of that crud out of the motor! I did get chance to speak to Pete McTree, and it seems his 660, and 460 suffer the same...

I think you've got it sussed Al, those over here who are really against anything modded are usually the ones who stick very close to the rules. There are many though, who really have no idea what its all about, like if you open anything up, it will blow it, or if you need a bigger output, buy a...

Now that looks more like a filter!:D The standard one on mine is far short of that one, will get onto it on monday morning and see if the HD is available over here! Oh, and when im able to down load the pics you guys will be able to see why i've been concerned, there is actually more dust...
