Old Timers - Was The Blakes Hitch Pretty Cool When Released?

That's a nice piece of history there, thanks for sharing! I can imagine after thousands of years of tying knots, it much be hard to come up with a new one these days.

Hey man, I know that we've been chatting for years here on The House and you told me your real name a long time ago. Just wondering if this is Rob Thigpen?

That's pretty cool, do we know who or when those names came about?

Old Timers - Was The Blakes Hitch Pretty Cool When Released?

Honestly, I think that they should have kept the SRT acronym and just called it Stationary Rope Technique (instead of Single Rope Technique)) and they could have used MRT and called it Moving Rope Technique (instead of MRS). That's the way they refer to them both in Australia and New Zealand and...

    Need a term.

Yeah, over here on the east coast in NH, we call the natural regen a "Pioneer Species" and never replant. 90 percent of NH is forested (I think). The pioneer species are the junk trees, Poplar, Alder, Birch, etc. (understory trees that shade the good stuff) and the "money trees" which are...

Old Timers - Was The Blakes Hitch Pretty Cool When Released?

I just found out recently from Don Blair that he actually named the Blake's Hitch for Jason. Apparently, he was talking to Jason Blake when Blake first started climbing on the hitch (which Blake had learned from someone else). He was telling Don how he was going to make a VHS tape of how to tie...

    Bend-and-Swing-Rigging

Yeah, Birch is very flexible. If it had been something more brittle like Poplar, I would have probably used a second side-tensioning line.

    Bend-and-Swing-Rigging

Here's an article from one of my rigging jobs from a few summers ago, that deals with lifting and swinging trees. Some interesting tips on utilizing the wood fibers in the tree to your advantage. https://tcimag.tcia.org/tree-care/bend-and-swing-rigging/

Older article on crane use in tree work.

We can only hope. Mark Chisholm was my first instructor in crane climber use many years ago, and I could not have asked for a better climber to learn from. So yeah, when I offer climbers advice on crane work, I know what I'm talking about...I learned from one of the best.

Older article on crane use in tree work.

I have a published crane article from years ago, that is written for climbers who are new to crane work. Many good tips in it. I will get the link for anyone interested?

    High-Lead Rigging in Tree Work

Thanks guys, I'm glad that you like the article. I have some questions to answer, but first, here's a few pics of the tree frame that we welded up. It works much better than the one that the Portable Winch Company sells. The triangular design allows you to mount it on smaller or larger diameter...
