If the COG is far to the side (and up) from the hinge, it will want to split more due to increased leverage.

A nice job. The top didn't look like it hinged to the face-cut direction much, on my small, magic human-rectangle.

I think some slow-motion video is in order. I'd aim for thin/ very thin hinges when having multiple, especially the rearmost hinge(s). If you weld up a log holder, you could do some short sections of log with a slow pull from an MA system or winch.

You can make the sapwood cuts below the hinge a good number of inches or more. Usually, for no exact reason, I'm staying within 6" of the apex of the facecut.

Looked like it was already 45⁰ over, facing 90⁰ to the layout. Doug- fir would be hard-pressed to do anything. To experiment with that idea, a much more upright tree with thinner hinges, in a no obstacle area, going a lot less off the lean, with a clean exit route would be better.

It will take more review on a bigger screen for me. I believe, overall, the cut manipulated the tree to lean towards the natural lean (toward the rear), rolling into the area of cut compression wood (90⁰ clockwise of the layout) into the 'secondary lean' , swinging with momentum, guided by...

@davidwyby I hope that pic works. I would bore-in from both sides to set up the hinges. Find a landmark on your bar (maybe a specific letter of the logo on the bar) that can help you know when you've bored-in halfway+ to be sure you don't have an accidental center post/ cut too much out of...

@davidwyby to add... you may (likely will) cut off part of a hinge, all of a hinge, part of two hinges, all of a hinge. IDK which if any face-cut type might work best. If I was trying get the most, (currently sitting in the recliner) I would consider a full-gap face, with the caveat---beware...

Try this if you like... Rather than having a triple- hinge on one side with a tapered backcut, bore 3 parellel, vertical slots, forming 4 full-width hinges (the rearmost hinge includes all of the remaining backcut- wood). Use a pull line that as-strongly-as-possible resembles a 90⁰ retainer...
