Just realized that the trees at 2:40 in his video, are where I suggested for this couple to hold their ceremony last autumn.

Putting images aside for a moment, here's a video I found recently from G. F. Beranek He published it around 2008, and somehow I sidestepped it over the years browsing the web. The Rotary Int. Grove is among the nicest in Prairie Creek park. <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/xd_iVMhLSr0" frameborder="0" allow="autoplay; encrypted-media" allowfullscreen></iframe> ...

Plus the new asphalt probably has an old layer beneath it, which probably slows heat transfer while the layer releases heat to the air. Here's another photo. Jedediah Smith park. I stop to look at the roots growing down, almost every time I enter this west end of the park.

Coast redwoods handle fire until some burn. Coast redwoods handle wind until some blow down. Coast redwoods handle some drought until some die-back on top. There may be a better description than "handling well". Some of the older ones have thicker bark. And they can resprout after defoliation in ways that other trees like Douglas fir don't.

Miles of new pavement. A few rigs were moving a bit quick, but most were traveling reasonably. But it made it easier to enjoy scenery driving than watching for pot holes.

Reminded me of a maple leaf I saw years ago west of Merlin Oregon. Not the same cause, but spotted, and with many more spots. At least I don't think it's related. That apple-cedar rust does affect Hawthorn and some other.

I think there's a bigger picture to this whole thing. Just prior to the 2020 election, the new administration can drop the hammer on thousands of Californians for violation of federal law, and "LOCK 'EM UP !!" Long enough to hinder some from voting.

Your post reminds me ... if it's illegal at the federal level, it wouldn't matter much what California votes for when it boils down to technicalities. So in a way, if it's still illegal, there could be a benefit to feds turning a blind eye. Then whenever they want to arrest, question or search someone for some other reason, they could use pot possession as a legal excuse to arrest them and gain access.

Thank you everyone. Feels good to get some details of 2017 squared away and back to a certain routine again moving toward 2018. BTW ... Happy New Year !! Also tried some portraits this week with the new Zeiss lens and fairly new Tamron 85mm. It was "uncharted territory" because we went 200 ft. higher up to a ridge top and there was lots of fog. We started up the hill to the left and the fog was thicker up there. I've never done portraits with fog before. Moisture glared from flash so I switched to available light only, which was dim under tall redwoods with fog. PS - to Stig - added the location on the first one. This is in Jedediah Smith park too.

A head start for 2018 photos. This was the end of December, but close enough. Just got a new lens I'm getting a handle on. The Zeiss Milvus 85mm. This was Howland Hill Rd. in Jedediah Smith park.

Another couple following their redwoods wedding. The groom particularly enjoyed hollow burned-out trunks and stopped to enter several of them. They traveled from Florida. The bride has never experienced an autumn in her life. Her first autumn experience was the redwood coast.

What do you guys "cut" pitch on your arms with? I sometimes use margarine and butter. But I think mayonnaise and peanut butter may work also.

It stands out because so many trunks are so straight. There's not much damage in this area. In fact, it continues down a hill and around a corner to a huge flat that has many more trunks and ferns looking just like this. Just flat. Almost tailored by nature for a redwood wedding.

Nice elderly red huckleberry among a grove of coast redwoods. These old huckleberry add a nice texture even in winter after leaves have fallen.

It probably depends on the area. Up by Portland's west side suburbs, people trended to not liking others at the door. Part of that evolution was due to scores of religious people going door to door. So up that way, I used to just leave cards. Down by Medford, Oregon, I found the opposite. A few times it was windy and I knocked so paper would not get left to blow away. After apologizing for ringing, the homeowners mentioned they'd rather that I ring the bell so they can see who was there. Also, there is a higher percentage of retirees down here compared to the part of north Oregon we lived in over a year ago. After starting to knock or use the bell here, not only did I get some work right away, but it also saved time by not needed to return a 2nd time for the estimate. I haven't advertised much in Ashland yet, but am curious to learn what it's like there. There's more trees down that way and I should get a strong foothold going this coming September in that town.

Prairie Creek is awesome. I'm supposed to do wedding photos for someone mid-Sept. and suggested they keep that park in mind this time of year. Attached below is something I've been wanting to photograph for quite some time. Took 8 minutes to reach the trunks from where my camera was placed.
