Just like a lineman, gaffs n lanyard. The city's palm contract entails some 45K street trees, and the company I've subbed for the longest, had that contract for two decades. My longtime friend Brian did them with a bucket, averaging 45 trees a day. Taking over for him when he took vacations was not something I enjoyed, I hate buckets! The hairy ones are up there 80-90 feet, way over a 50 bucket, and you can see the old gaff trails goin up the high side! Lots of veterans say fug that. My trick was tyin the trunk to the bucket fully extended to add a bit more stability! Kinduva big no no, but it made me feel better gaffin up to a head forty feet further up! The only wash fans I've seen fail were planted on bedrock with a thin layer of topsoil that went over roots n all. There's a reason palms are one of the few trees left standing after hurricanes. They are amazingly tough. Jomo

Lots n lots of wannabe climbers hair out on SoCal's most famous iconic trees. I'll never forget peeling butt wraps off wash fans on the beach of Coronado, when a huge C135 cargo jet came in low to land on North Island, dang wash off that thing bout blew me outta the tree!

So the ARP7's a whisker away from its first real test aloft doin pine removals Tuesday. Meanwhile testing at home's been quite vigorous. I throw 5 lb weights with it left handed from two steps up a small ladder, landing them fairly consistently 10-15 feet in front of me. Still in search of just the right strength trigger return spring, it's become quite the challenge fo find just the right one.

No no no Jomo, These high cable wear friction points? They must be eliminated entirely! Do you have any idea how badly you'd hurt your most precious spheres if that cable snapped? It's very similar to leaning back in your stirrups to stop a horse, raise a leg, kick outward while leaning back, then pivot up on a straight leg, repeat with the other leg.

I predict three sets of palm stepper's will be needed to prune most palm species. From reclinatas to fat boy dates. Great means of recycling old tires too. What I need's a one inch square punch! Jomo

Round rolling washers, of varying OD at critical support links, combined with rubber washers that are square, make my Palm stepper's somewhat unique. I've kinda shocked myself, they are very fluid n smooth, rolling over deformities n bumps goin up, and cinching like a mofo when stepping down. Too good to be true really.

Have yu seen the coconut harvesting climbing chair guy in Indoneia. The stand up sit down scissor choking chair? It works too. But mine's much lighter, simpler n faster! They don't take kindly to gaffin the trees that feed em in Indonesia either! Bad karma, berry berry bad! Jomo

Sorry, it's an ISA thing, not gaffing palms Kyle. High end clients usually stipulate their palms be pruned by ladder or bucket lift of some kind. These Palm gaffs make me as valuable as a bucket, at a fraction of the cost, be it hourly, or equip cost. Jomo

This idea's been floating about in my mind for decades, including a few failed pro typing attempts over the years. Simple cinching's not the challenge, it's the letting go, combined with maintaining strap stiffness that makes upward progress possible. Staring at my old abandoned telescoping tube palm stepper prototype's springs, with canibalistic intent, a far more simple, choke, let go, remain stiff, solution popped into being, one set of gaffs and a lanyard, up to a foot of circumferential adjustability, wash fans, filiferas, cocos etc. Stainless steel aircraft cable, much like a wire core lanyard, springs, steel washers, rubber washers, a cable winding mechanism, and voila! Palm climbing gaffs! Gonna punch out one inch square rubber washers from old tires! The tighter the springs, the stiffer the choke ring goin upward! Buckets? Buckets! We don't need no stinkin buckets!

So l wake up this morning hell bent on finishing this pistol before the day's out. But as fate would have it, my search for just the right spring, uncovered an old palm climber gaffs project from years ago. To cannibalize one project for another? Staring at my old prototype palm climbers' failings n shortcomings, a super simple solution popped in my head, a quick cheap easy build. Once an idea lodges itself in your head, it's impossible to ignore. But I did fashion a better trigger assembly guard housing for Jerr's Pistol. Still ain't found just the right strength spring yet.

Seems to me the obvious next step's to integrate a badass saltwater fishing reel, good for Marlins n sharks. Prototype 8 should be light enough with an aluminum body n such a reel. Great way to have lunch sent up to you, and would probably work well as an emergency escape tool in a pinch. Set the drag just so n jump! Jomo
