Sounds good but unless you KNOW where the beaten zone is and what is in it those bullets are indiscriminately fired deadly projectiles. Desert....rural trailer park....still can be a problem. I'm with the boss here. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Field_of_fire_(weaponry)

It was a smart move....let him protect his hand from the knife as he tried to help the woman. If nothing like that is handy you can use your shoe on your hand...let the shoe take a cut instead of you. That lady got stabbed a lot. Better solution for the rescuer is a good stick, shovel....or gun.

Big wind came through on Wed., been busy, snapped trees, a liquidambar that fell apart in three different directions, then an emergency call at 4pm for a huge elm an hr away, they could hear it cracking. Big split in a heavy branch up at about 25'...cut the end weight off, lashed the remains to the branch above. If I hadn't have gone.that whole thing would have been on the ground by morning, twisted and torn. Bed and breakfast, people park underneath! Didn't get home till after 8. Finish it up on Monday

Yeah, Butch, that is an obvious truth. But you've probably hit the nail on the head. The fact that they are the newest might make it likely that they have a higher chance of producing the outcome the Forest Service is looking for. I'd love to hear more background from Burnham about how the stuff that gets picked from the top of the trees ends up being employed. I thought I read somewhere, maybe in this thread, that the cones are not the only thing that gets harvested. Maybe it was some kind of grafting wood? I guess I'm starting to develop an interest in tree biology, after all this time. Better late than never, I guess. Up to now it's mostly been about how to keep from killing myself while trying to climb trees. Thanks in advance to Burnham if he manages to see this thread and post his thoughts. Tim

I also wanted to pull this post of Burnham's forward, as it is of primary importance to this thread. Just to save some possible new members of the forum some time if they're not inclined to read through this whole thread, like I just did. The whole thread is well worth reading, though, in my humble opinion, for those that are interested. Tim

Bump. Ok, revealing my ignorance of tree biology, what is it about the cones at the top of the tree that make them so special? I'm assuming that these conifers have cones all over the canopy, many of which are probably much lower and easier to access? So there must be some important, fundamental difference in the ones at the top? Thanks in advance to anyone who is able to enlighten me on this subject. Tim

Hey, Mellow! If you manage to see this post, maybe you could try to communicate with Chris on Facebook and let him know that people here are missing him. I'm not on Facebook, and have no idea how it all works over there. Can you do a private message thing over there like you can here? If yes, you could make a request that he visit here once in awhile in private, and see what he says. Thanks in advance if you choose to try to make this gesture. Tim

Great info...thx. I have a friend who was extremely paranoid about microfractures. Teaching Scouts to climb 1 year a scout dropped one from waist high on to the rock at his feet and this guy almost lost it mentally. Poor scout did not know what was happening. .

I buy a morning coffee from our local takeaway/petrol station/convenience store/newsagent...in a small village we like to support the locals! Besides, he puts a 'freckle' on top of each cup (a small chocolate) has a coffee card (buy 5 get one free) makes GOOD coffee, is cheerful and we are lucky to have them here! I bring one of those reusable coffee cups...made of recycled plastic... 10 kms up the highway is our 'big brother' town, they have two franchise bakeries...coffee's still good, and quite a few people I know work there, so at a pinch, yup.
