I watched a great video once, I think it was called "the one percent" or something like that. The film was made by the aire to Johnson and Johnson. He interviewed Warren's daughter who lived in an art studio and had dreadlocks, she seemed bitter that Warren had denied her funds and given away most of his fortune. It was a good film, I'll never forget the reaction of this cabbie when the kid told him he was from J and J. He said something like "ya'll are wealthy, like wealthy wealthy, but I'm wealthy in morals and respect!"

In discussions pertaining to wealth we should never forget the words of King Solomon!!! "I have seen all the works which have been done under the sun, and behold, all is vanity and striving after wind."

Right on, Jim. It doesn't really bother me either, although I can't help but wonder what goes on in someone's head to justify having that much cash. Also, you gotta figure that that cash was consolidated at the expense or loss of others, most likely. I'm not sure about a revolution, maybe one truly from the people but Orwell taught us that that rarely happens. The "elite" of the have not's eventually become the have's and so the story goes. It doesn't mean that it's bound to repeat itself indefinitely though.

Everyone's just always known that? I was about 15 probably around the first I had heard such a thing but I had never heard the statement that 8 people have more wealth than half of the world. Or that one CEO makes the same as 10,000 workers in Bangladesh, so yeah, it was news to me.

That White Stripes cover is pretty damn good, way better than the live cover of "Isis" I've heard. Bob's studio version is still my favorite though.

I can't stand working hourly, like you said they're counting and making sure you keep working while the clock is running. We've more or less given up on chasing removal work, for several reasons, one being the race to the bottom on pricing. Luckily, our market can support us doing 90% or more pruning work. Edit, maybe I'm hyper paranoid but this is the stuff I don't want my competition reading.... they need to keep focusing on removals for my plan to work.....

I am lazy and also rig whenever possible or practical, largely in my part because I am not the most competent climber and I would rather not take any extra chances. That being said I occasionally man handle a piece that I probably shouldn't and a device such as this may help, although I would not carry one waiting for that rare occurrence. I think the limbsnatcher 3000 (heheh) would shine for bucketeers on street or line contracts.

If a tree needs to be dismantled and 2 companies have proof of insurance then definitely hire the cheapest! Why not? The reasons you listed... maybe where you live but I would not say that those same odds apply to my market. Anyone who is licensed in my town is at least somewhat legit, a removal is straight forward, if nothing is damaged and all of the wood is out victory is had! Besides, Sean, I do hard drugs on the job site every day, cigs and coffee! :P

Sam, Yeah, I think that's the whole tcia pitch. I advise customers to hire the cheapest removal bid who is licensed and insured, why not?

Something I also think about often. What constitutes a living wage? My own version of it for the area I live in is about 30 bucks an hour would get you a fairly comfortable life in Boulder County, CO. But you probably wouldn't be able to save much at that rate in this area.

Interesting, I do not know much about functioning unions, just a basic idea of what a labor union is. Around here we have little to no union action, I think there is a grocer's union and maybe an electrician's union. I completely understand the notion of a fat, entitled union worker. I've heard some say that unions destroy healthy competition.

In my brief time as a tree worker in Colorado I have often thought about the wages for tree workers and ways to increase them, we all know it is a dangerous job and a hard one at that. Many solutions have been put forth, mainly the idea of improving public image and professionalism in order to demand higher compensation from the public. I've wondered many times if there should be some type of union or collective that could have more bargaining power. What do the tree housers say? As an owner operator I really have no stake in this at the moment, I set my own rates and get the compensation I need to get by and carry on. However I still come in to contact with and often think about the folks who toil away for peanuts on a daily basis. Is it every man for himself or should we have an eye to elevate our trade as a whole?
