Along Rich's comments, they feed very shallow so sapwood rot sets it quickly though fruiting bodies may not be evident. Sapwood strength loss can make for very dangerous trees to work on and in. Be safe.

Still needs to be used wisely due to the long residual. Imagine how many bees would die if a linden or crab apple was injected with the stuff.

One thing that made me more comfortable about using emben was learning that it is used commercially, sprayed on broccoli and what not. Injecting a thimble full into a tree in someones front yard probably wont kill all the brown barbaloots, or at least is a splash in the bucket, comparatively.

I've treated well over 1000 ash for eab since 2012 alone, started some treatments as early as 2004 as Columbus was an epicenter due to fast urban sprawl and redevelopment. Chionanthus is indeed a host and our American version is more susceptible. Em Ben is most effective for trees over 15" and treatments are good for 3 (4?) years despite the label saying a 2 year cycle. Not a fan of trunk injections from a compartmentalization standpoint and our ash arent the greatest at it. I'm now pushing folks for a 3 year cycle despite that "label is the law" business. Neonics are pretty effective for smaller trees as a drench or basal soil injection but Imid can get bound up in finer soils and OM. Safari is far more soluble but is pretty expensive and the residual is significantly shorter so timing with it is very important. Imid trunk injections can lead to cambial necrosis so flushing with water after an injection is warranted if using Imid. Ash aren't visited by bees here but that is not to say that beneficials of other varieties aren't affected...I have no idea however. Injections with Azadiractin sound great...but arent terribly effective and have to be injected annually. Far too much wounding.

In 5 years? Seems fast, maybe Bartlett sales pitch? The university here has said plan for at least 30 infestation.

 @ Bradford pear That's another beef I have with the juice. Its a lot of cash, many can afford it but is it really worth it? Eventually the tree will die anyway. Situational I guess. We live on a prarie turned urban forest, nothing grows very well here anyways.

I just can't make up my mind about the treatments. Most say the emamectin benzoate used in small amounts is more or less harmless. Others say it kills bees. I'm sure its fine to use but...... I just don't feel very great about it.

Seems to me it takes around 5 years for a tree to become stone dead from the critter. I have not removed a completely dead one yet but have heard that they are kinda sketchy to work on. That's all I got:) Oh yeah, you can make a killing on injections but it's kinda lame imo. Good luck!

Lol that's hilarious. After a bit of squating after the read my whole body feels instantly better. I'll try some single legs, a good goal at least. The kneeling pose hurts my feet bad. Probably means I should do it more.

True, true. Even worse when you lock your small child in there with the keys. Ashamed to say I've done that THREE times. I never intentionally lock any vehicle and always leave the keys on the floor, wtf. I also rarely carry a phone when not working, makes for some interesting stuff. Like the first time I smashed a window out with a mini sledge. :D
