If this is the chart it seems decent, almost a thounsand pounds at 70 feet: http://heavycherry.com/imgs/a/f/b/e/v/palfinger__pk_19000_d_removable_crossbar_gripper_control_1997_9_lgw.jpg If I bought a used crane I would get it well tested, x-ray inspection and all.

Well anyone who is doing sales would have to know the daily numbers at least, from there he can extrapolate. Also, it would be hard to hide my profits if they know thery are getting a percentage of said profit...the math would be pretty simple. I have heard mixed ideas about revealing numbers. The downsides are obvious. The upside, apparently, is that employees get to realise what the costs of running a business are and how much time and work is involved. And posibly the incentive that the company making more money means they are making more money. I have never heard someone who works at GE or Pfeizer complain about their wages because they know what the company profits are, why would it be different for a small company?

I have three guys that I would like to give more responsabilities to: doing estimates and consultations, being ahead on mechanical issues, putting together and maintaining a safety and training program. This would allow me to concentrate on doing some business development, hiring new people, purchasing new gear, having SOME time off. I get a monthly report from my accountant with a breakdown of all my expenses and my profits. I was thinking of using this to dish out bonuses. Give them a raise on their hourly and then a 2-3% bonus per month on whatever profit comes out of the company. So if the company makes 20k of profit for the month, they would each get 400-600$ extra. If your boss showed you this, would you be down? I know these guys like challenges, so I think they could be up for it.

Why would profit go down? I mean other than because you're sharing part of that profit with a few people?

How do they do it, the ones that do? I'm all down for equality, I don't need a Benz and an estate to live, but I do want my risk and work to be worth it. But so do my employees! I've looke into the COOP thing, and it seems good until you hit a certain point, then it gets complicated...

Looking for ways to keep key employees AND making them responsible. Anyone ever set-up a profit sharing program? In Canada? My bros worked for 1-800-GOT-JUNK and I think he got profit sharing at the end of every day. Didn't make him stay, but I remember him working harder to get the job done well and profitably. Anyone do this? Nick, Willie?

I have a greenwheel, the two-sided one, on a stump slayer 30hp mini attachment. It was really a game changer for us with our grinder, night and day!

I guess it would be a more thorough level 1 or a quicker level 2, somewhere in the middle.

I did QTRA a few years back and more recently TRAQ. I did feel they wanted a level two for each tree at first, but that would be ridicously time-consuming, especially for trees with no visible defects. For the most part I have a green light for the work but they want to budget how much it will cost. I can't give them a rough idea of time without knowing how many trees might need a level 2/3, so I thought I would start with a quick scan of all parks (level 1). It would be easier to estimate this, give them said estimate, then knowing how many trees need further inspection I could estimate more time for level 2/3. The more I think of it the more I think this could probably be done in 2-3 minutes per tree, but I could add a little more for the ''unforseen event'' :)

I have a municipality that have asked me to give them a proposition for risk assessment in three parks, roughly 1100 trees. They have no idea how to go about this, so I was thinking of doing it this way: - Level 1 walk by assessment with a 360 degree observation of each tree. Note only major defects or areas of concern for safety (decay, conks, fungus, cracks, dead branches, lean, etc.) No notes about tree health or insect/disease problems. - No recommendations on my part, the muni will decide which trees should be inspected further and we will make them a proposition at that point. - They are providing inventory info with geolocalisation of each tree. So, how much time per tree on average? I was thinking 4-5 minutes including prep and documenting/reporting. I kind of tried it out at one of the parks, lots of trees go quickly, then some take a little longer. 4 minutes per = 73 hours 5 minutes per = 92 hours

I have also learned lately that doing things on the slide to try to keep the cost of the job down is not worth it in the long run. I'm really starting to get anal about permits, rules, contracts, clauses, signagne blablabla just because it's not worth it to try to save the client money. If that's what it cost than that is what it cost and if they don't like it, they can hire the next guy that will take the risk!

Thanks Nick, I might put a sales guy omn the team next year, so I was just wondering how you went about it. I see unforseen as lots of metal in the trunk, a guy that left his car parked at the wrong place, things like that.

What happens if your salesman underbids the job? Does he still get a percentage? What if the job goes under but because of unforseen events? Or if he doesn't properly communicate what the client wants and you have to go back?
