I ask for resumes and a cover letter through email, no calls. If they can't do that to start, they're out. Next step is a full day, working interview. See what they got, then yea or nay.

I use 'grave before shave' maybe once a week or two. Good stuff, helps keep eczema down in the winter (dry high desert climate). I'm actually in Micks camp regarding product, but it seems to help...

I will be 50 on Saturday....I climb most days....not sure when I will be done....I have only used spurs 5 times for the year for short periods on a pole....On big removals brush is gone without spurs and then in comes a knuckeboom for the wood....so spurs for that....but I sell pruning like a mofo....hey who knows when that time will be...I love climbing and use SRT all day long...with very little DdRT mosly small stuff....

I flop Pondos regularly onto roads, concrete, asphalt drives... if the crown is going to hit, it's usually a soft landing, unless it's a big one with wolfy limbs. Definitely want to avoid the trunk hitting first. Log cribbing works well. I also like to utilize old tires and plywood.

I shoot a line trough the top, making sure to hang over a couple decent limbs, then get the SRT line to run down the trunk. Or if I'm feeling lazy, just hit a lower limb and alternate lanyard/life line up (or free climb :O ) I typically SRT most prunes and just advance an SRT line when doing a removal.

Raise hourly rate in relation to time savings. If by hand you could do 1 pine in a day complete for $1500. Now you can do it for $1200 in a half day with the machine. Now you are keeping you rates competitive but bringing in day total of $2400. I had a local guy tell me once that he used to do $1000 a day for a crew rate, but with a bigger chipper and loader he could knock out 3 pines instead of 1 and still make a $1000. I told him he was a moron. Why invest in equipment and not see any return other than speed and undercutting the market heavily.

We used to have a little drying room in Portland at the shop. Nice to have dry gear for a whole 5 minutes in the morning. More to keep the mold and stench down in the trucks...
