I haven't seen the trees yet, but apparently they are a mix of Grand fir, Noble fir and Doug fir. All are too big for the harvesters to handle. Some of the better Dougs will be custom bucked for a local mill that makes high end floors. The rest all go on a slow boat to China. Probably get 3 good logs and maybe a half length log out of each tree. Thinner stuff and broken logs will just be left and go into the biomass pile. Even if it takes us 4 days, we'll still make good money, but pulling it off in 3 would be great.

And also those halcyon days when there were no liberals on the forum, apparently. So, Brian. Care to tell me when these wonderful, rosy tinged " Old days" were? Since you keep bringing them up, it would be interesting to know when the forum, in your opinion, changed to the lesser format, full of liberal Treebuzz rejects.

Man, that is the parsnip that ate Cincinnati! Chopped into inch thick chunks and broiled is also good.

We'll be limbing them and bucking to shipping container lengths , 11,8 meters,or half that if the tree is broken up. But we are 3 guys falling, so I think it'll work out. It'll all be stuffed into containers and sailed to China.

I have seen old hellenic vases from kreta with pictures of people leaping over bulls. Had no idea it was still done today. <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/dXAk91PltMI" frameborder="0" allow="autoplay; encrypted-media" allowfullscreen></iframe>

We are falling smallish oaks. Normally this would be a job for a mechanical harvester, but since we we are already there, and it is a small job, they let us loose on it instead of going to the trouble and cost of bringing a machine in. That is so relaxing compared to the big stuff we normally fall. Got a call today from a forester who needed 500 cubic meters of large spruce and fir cut for shipping to China. That'll be fun, too.

Hate what CA has become. Anyway. It is not just the immigrants. A lot of it is policy for aid. We still have a rash of folks that are homeless or just plain lost about everything and are under employed. Remember that bubble thingy not so many years ago when real estate crashed and people lost home on bad loans. Yeah, we are still feeling that here. Look up homeless in SF or LA. Plenty of news there. A lot of industry has fled the state as well since it is so expensive to have a business here.

Nope, not antifreeze which is Ethylene glycol. What you use is poly ethylene glycole. What it does is entering the cell structure and leaving a residue on the inside of that, which keeps the structure intact keeping the wood from shinking as it dries. So no checks or splits. Works well on smaller stuff, but it is an expensive solution and if the wood is later heated, the PEG melts and starts seeping out. So when your mother in law puts the beautiful bowl that you made for her on top of the radiator, problems will enuse, unless you used a drip proof lacquer. I'e experimented, but didn't like it. it works well if you want to preserve a full "cookie" section of a log, without it splitting.

There are constantly folks here who try to sell the removal as a do it yourself for wood turners. Quite funny. 2-3 years ago a group of turners hired me to take some do it yourself trees like that down for them. I just put them on the ground, they did the clean up and kept the wood. Big size walnuts. They were quite happy about paying me.
