View Full Version : Rope bag project...

Its been a while since I've posted anything about the rope bags so I guess its time for an update:
I'm still getting folks requesting the mesh bags but I had stopped taking order earlier this summer because the Bag lady has stopped making the bags for the year...for what ever reason.
PIGWOT was kind enough to offer a lead to a company that may be interested in making the bags but due a family situation with the owner, things are understandably on hold.
On the flip side, I came across a small local sewing shop that does freelance work. I visited them today and showed them the 14" mesh bag and they said they'd give it a try. I now have to get the templates & pattern over to them as well as the materials/fabric so they can work out the labor cost after building a few. The owner said she would have to get a few different parts for her machine(s), (different foot) but it wasn't a big deal.
Once I get their price on labor for the bags, I'll see what the overall bag cost will be and then decide if its worth it or not to continue making them. Cross your fingers!
So it looks like I just might be back up & running in the new year!:D
As for the original Bag Lady...she is still working full time at her day job but said she'll be quitting in the new year. ...She said the same thing last year!:what: This may work out nicely because the bag Lady doesn't have any desire to mass produce bags. She has no problem making a few now & then but frankly isn't up to the big orders. For now, she'll be doing the solid bags (when ever she get around to it) and working on new ideas for prototypes that I come up with. Example:-Like a new design for a mesh through line bag etc. She'll also be doing all the custom bags,(again eventually).
I hope this works out because if it doesn't, I'll have to turn this mesh bag gig over to some arbo manufacturer so they can farm it out to China or Mexico to make a cheap version in some sweatshop. I DON'T want to do that if I don't have to!!!
By this weekend I should have the materials over to the new shop and then it's a matter of "wait & see" at that point!
Time will tell eh,
HC

Just got home from dropping off all the bag materials with the sew shop. They said they're gonna make a few to see how much time will be required to make each bag and work out a price per item. That price will determine everything!!!
With Christmas just around the corner, I don't expect to hear back from them any time soon but ya never know.
If things work out with the shop, I'm only going to be producing the 14" mesh bag (at this time). The idea is this: Most standard hanks come either 120' or 150' length. So why have a 16" bag if your only going to be filling it with the shorter ropes! Later on I'll likely have other sizes made but for now I just want to keep things simple. Baby steps and all that, eh!
Again, before I get ahead of myself, I have to wait & see shat kinda price they quote me first!
More later,
HC

I hope these go through, I love my solid bags!.
As far as the 16" bags, IMO you should make those too. Some of my bags hold 2 125' ropes. My climbing bag holds my 120' rope plus my saddle and helmet all in one.
But good luck, hope it all works out.

At some point I wouldn't mind getting a 16" solid bag to hold a bullrope. But I'll wait until you get the production things worked out. ;)

Thanks,
As far as the sew shop goes, once I hear something you'll be the first to know! Nothing yet.
Regarding that last rope bag (skulls), that is my personal bag and a Birthday present from the Bag Lady. It was a "one-of" and can NOT be offered for sale because the pattern is a custom design used with the Shock-Pro brand shock covers. Its same place the Bag Lady works. She had one of her co-workers digitally remove their logo from that pattern and print out four panels. (Don't tell the owner ;) ). They were used in the construction of my "Skull Bag".
Maybe down the road I could look into different patterns or logos for a custom bag but thats a long way off. I still have to see if things are gonna work out with this sew shop.

I've been thrashing mine pretty hard. Throwing it into the back of the truck with the pole tools and chips, dropping it from the tree, etc.
So far, so good. It cant be as strong as 1000 danier cordura, but they do a great job.

Here's the bad news,
The woman from the sew shop I was looking into called tonight. She's been working on the Mesh bag for a few days now. The bags are taking over 3 hours to put together from scratch and the technique used to attach the webbing with its backing was a bit to much for her and her arthritus(sp).
She has one partly finished but was not satisfied with the was it was turning out. She could not get the bottom section as close to the sides as was required. She did mentioned that the original "Bag Lady" is a very talented sewer and should be credited on her creation! That was nice.
So for now, I am dead in the water as far as me producing any more bags unless I find another sew shop to make them for me! Sorry to everyone who have been waiting for their order.
---------------------
Now the good news,
I was contacted by a reputable arborist supply company(USA) that was very interested in the solid bags. I sent them one at their request to see if they can reproduce it. If so, they will be available from that supplier in the near future. Cross your fingers...again!!!;).
Later,
Bob (aka-HC)

Sure Nick,
"BOUNCE", (Sean at Wes-Spur) got a hold of me a few weeks back and was interested in the Solid Bag. He has to see if they can reproduce it first and then get the OK from his boss to proceed further!
It's not an easy bag to make and time consuming but then again...worth it IMHO!
FRANS mentioned a couple posts back that he had a German connection that might be interested in manufacturing & marketing the Mesh Bag. I called him on his cell while he was driving the truck home... just before he lost his breaks. It was a short phone call for obvious reasons and I haven't head back from him.
Things are still up in the air for the moment but I haven't given up hope yet! Just waiting to hear back at this time.

The Yellow & Blue bags were one of the earlier bags built. The blue material was a bit stiffer and because yellow was not, all the solid bags after that are all blue.
All my bags (Except for a few prototypes) have a yellow bottom inside! This identifies them as mine and "The Bag Lady's" design!!! ... IMHO, I like to think of it as a symbol of quality. ;)

I'm going to be making a Scrap Book/Photo Album of your pictures and comments and then give it to "The Bag Lady".
Though I came up with the concept of the bag in its present form, she's the one that made it all happen with her incredible sewing skills!!!:notworthy:
It now looks like Wes-Spur may be making and selling them in the near future if all goes well. Cross your fingers!
Again, I'd like to thank everyone here who offered their input it the development of "The Rope Bag Project" as well to everyone who bought them from me and furthered its success.

Bob,
Was it ever discussed about the idea of having a loop sewn inside the bag to attach the end of the line to?
I have enjoyed using your bag...to make it more useful to me, I took some small diameter line (maybe 5/16"), tied a circle with it about 2-3 inch diameter and sewed that to the inside of the bag. I attach the end of the line to that loop...before I had to tie it to the handle which was messy.
With the rope end tied to the loop I can pull the bag up to me when I need to.
(oops...my bad...I sewed the loop into my Sherrill bag, haven't done yours yet)

I mentioned it a while ago and bob really liked the idea. Maybe it will make it into the potential wesspur model.
I like the idea of a ring sewn into the top.

[QUOTE=pantheraba;199083]Bob,
Was it ever discussed about the idea of having a loop sewn inside the bag to attach the end of the line to?
------------------------------
Gary,
Yes it was! Nick suggested the idea of a loop a while back. Its actual location & position was a matter of preference though.
The way I'm going to do it is very simple. There is a web strip between the web handle and the bag that acts as a stiffener. All I am going to do is extend that middle web strip past the rim of the bag, fold it into a loop and return the end back between the web handle and the bag.
With this configuration it will provide the most strength because the middle web strap (stiffener) with the loop will be sewn the full length of the bag! It will also look much cleaner and when not in use, will not get in the way of loading or deploying your rope!;)
The loop will be big enough for a biner to fit, nothing bigger than a 1' loop would work best, IMO.
See pics below,

Ya know, you could always slip a split ring into that loop.

Good one top hopper!
I'll have to direct your future solid rope bag orders to BOUNCE (Sean at Wes-Spur). Looks like they may be selling them come summer if all goes well.
.
The reason I'm looking for pictures from you guys is because I'd like to put together some type of scrap book for the "Bag Lady" of the work she's done and to help lift her spirits.
The "Bag Lady" will be going to the hospital for surgery next Tuesday. Turns out she's developed a tumor that must to be removed. They don't believe its cancer but either way, she'll be in I.C.U. for 5 days following the operation.
As back ground, she's been a retired nurse for a some time now but never gave up her love of sewing. She's been sewing for a company called Shock-Pros, www.shockpros.com and has been their primary shock cover sewer since she started. I'm told she produces about 10,000pr per year.
About two years ago, I asked her to see if she new a way to make a standard rope bag (CMI bag) stand up and stay open. After several attempts and input from you good people, we finally came up with a proper bag and never been able to keep up with orders ever since!
FRANS got us started on the Mesh Bag last year and looks like it will take off soon as well. I love the mesh when working in the winter, with all the wet snow, it airs out just fine over regular bags!
Its anticipated that the Bag Lady will make a full & quick recovery, its just something that needs to be done is all. I'll let ya know once she's home in a few weeks.
So, how about them pics!
Thanks guys,

The Bag Lady had her surgery this past Tuesday and a tumor was removed. Turns out it was in fact cancerous and further tests are being done to find out its type. Our bag builder is doing well but will be in the hospital for another 8 -10 days recovering.
I brought her copies of the pictures you guys sent me and that seemed lifted her spirits. She had no idea that the bags she made had been sent all across North America. There are even a few over seas in the UK.
After looking at the pictures, she kept making comments like: "That looks dangerous", "That guy better be careful", "How did he get up there to do that", "Wow", "You'll never catch me up there in a million years", etc etc.
If nothing else, it was a pleasant distraction to help take her mind off of things for a little while.
Thank you,

The "Bag Lady" is doing just fine and all is good! She isn't all that interested in making the bags anytime soon (understandable I guess) but I do have some good news.
Wes-Spur in WA (via "Bounce") has taken on the solid fabric blue bag and will be selling them once they get enough for inventory this summer. Still working out a few details...
Sean at Wes-Spur indicated they are not ready for the Mesh Bag just yet until they get the other one up & running.
Because the Bag Lady is not in a position to build or improve the Mesh Bag at this time, our old friend "Tree Machine" (Jim C.) was kind enough to hook me up with a fellow who manufacturers rock climbing equipment. It isn't a large operation but they are willing to get a few mesh bags produced for me. This company has a few ideas for the mesh bag regarding design to make it easier to build quickly.
We're still in the early stages of discussion & I'll keep you guys posted. This week I'll be sending them a sample and some material and see what they come up with. We'll see where it goes from there.
*
I'll let everyone know once Wes-Spur gets up & running with the solid bags. Its suppose called the "HC-bag" and will have my signature yellow bottom on the inside to tell it apart from other bags! 8)

Be sure to ask for the "HC-Bags" (the ones with the yellow bottom inside)!

Hey Guys,
Well, its been 2 years to the month since the first prototypes were sent to Lumberjack for field testing. (Thanks again Carl for all your help, I owe you one)!
Because of everyones suggestions as well as the "Bag Lady's" sewing skills, a unique & practical rope bag as been created.
Although it may look like any other bag on the marker, it has a lot of extras built in to it as most of you all know!
The last of the details have been worked out just a few moments ago between WesSpur & I, so now it time for "WesSpur" to get the bags into production and have some ready later next month. :D
There is a minor change to the bag and after compairing the original to the production version...its a good change & I like it!!!
I'll post a pic of Bag #1 as soon as I can. Below is a pic of one of the last originals sent in form a fellow houser.
Wow, this is very cool and makes me proud to to be able to contribute something to our industry!
Thanks again everyone for putting up with me over the last few years!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !
Good things to follow,
Bob

I'd have to agree with you Mr.B.
The mesh bags are great for winter & wet weather tree work!
After a (winter) job, I loaded a solid bag and left it for 3 weeks. After I opened that bag, the rope was still damp!!! The advantage of the mesh bag is obvious!;)
"WesSpur" will pick up my Mesh line so long as sales of the solid bag go well.
So...who needs a rope bag???:D
...contact WesSpur ( www.wesspur.com ) with your rope bag orders and ask for the "HC-Bag" by name!

I refer all further questions to WesSpur regarding the launch date of the bags.
Ah, BOUNCE, can you add to this in any way, :? ???

Maybe give BOUNCE a shout via PM here at the TH or email him at WesSpur:

Once the actually realize that there will be a number of orders comming, they'll likely kick production up.
Best to ask the folks at WesSpur!

I just got the first 8 HC rope bags in stock. These are the solid ones, not the mesh. Also, they are red instead of blue in case any of you are fashion conscious. They are going for $45, but if any Treehousers want one just give me a call and I'll give it to you for $37 through July. Bear in mind this is not an official Wesspur sale, so you'll have to speak with me personally and mention that you are a Treehouser to get this price (heck, what good is a position of authority if you can't abuse it, right?). Feel free to PM me if you want, but I can't take cc #'s that way. It will probably take a week or so to get these up on the website, so they aren't available online for now.
End of advertisement
Please understand I'm trying hard not to misuse/abuse the Treehouse by advertising products for Wesspur here. I post on TH for my own benefit and would like to keep things that way. I'm breaking my own rule this time only because this is the forum and thread where the bags were developed and I'd like to give something back to the community the design came from. I think a lot of us are here because we got sick of the censorship imposed by corporate sponsors at other sites and I don't want that to happen here.

And another thing, Wesspur now sells climbing rope with a tight eye splice! It's been a couple years since my last rope purchase, and at that time my only options for a tight eye were Sherrill or splice it myself. So this time I was finally able to buy my rope from Wesspur, which pretty much eliminates any need for me to deal with Sherrill any more. :)

I'll admit though, it's a nice place to work (nobody screams at me to work faster or threatens to chip me if I don't finish by sundown) and shop (maybe a little too nice - I joke with my boss that he might as well pay me in gear). I'll pass along the compliments to the people here who are actually making the day-to-day decisions that make this a cool place to work and buy gear.

I got my 2 new red HC rope bags today. :D I don't think they are quite as stiff as the blue ones, but they are very nice. I will finally be able to replace that stupid Sherril bag that holds my 9/16" stable braid. You know the one, with the floppy top that gets in your way when you're trying to put the rope in the bag.
Thank you Sean, for your assistance in getting Bob's rope bags to market.

No problemo. I'll talk to our sewing lady and see if we can work something out to make them stiffer. We tried to exactly duplicate Bob's design, but maybe our webbing isn't quite as stiff? I'll work something out here. I've learned that products like this will almost always be a work in progress.

Except for being a different color, the material we're using is exactly the same as the stuff Bob was using, right down to the name, thickness, vinyl coating on the inside, etc. I'll keep an eye on this thread for a few months in case anybody has recommendations for improvement.

We're already on our 2nd batch. Some slight improvements have been made, most of which you wouldn't ever notice unless you were taking one apart. The cord is threaded in a little better way, some of the seams are double or triple stitched, webbing is folded and then stitched so it stays flatter, etc. I tossed one out a tree last weekend from over 100', only to see it land directly on a stub poking up out of a log on the ground. No damage.
