to continue this thread, I must show the jacket that I got for my birthday a couple days ago. a joint effort from my sisters and parents, husqvarna cutters jacket with saw protection in the shoulders etc. Do I get special recognition because the only place I left a list of birthday wishes was my local arborist shop?

other items included a clinometer & increment borer with a few other trinkets....

I know. I have a yard full of stuff I'm moving. there's a Gravely 395 with a new axle waiting to be installed, diesel tanks, Hydrualic tanks, Hydraulic pump sets, a loglift 71F with dual extensions, 3 grapples, another 10t lorry crane, winches, turntables, vast arrays of hydraulic hose and electric valve banks, track undercarriages, steel sheet and plate, a 30 inch capacity chipper with giant infeed (even with the 140hiab, I cant lift that one...)
Phew! its amazing all the stuff you garner. I have 4 tonnes of scrap to go tommorrow...:|:

Nice truck Brian, when did you get it?

stehansen
08-15-2006, 09:05 PM
Yesterday I had one 200T getting fixed because I dropped it and broke the wrap around handle, my other 200T started leaning out and wouldn't stay running, had to start it almost every cut, so I went with the back-up to the back-up a shindaiwa 360. Used it for about 1 minute and the muffler fell off. So I drove about 20 miles in the bucket truck and bought a new 192T. Used it yesterday afternoon and today. It is a little lighter than the 200, has about 25% less power and it feels really smooth cutting with it. Pictures to follow tomorrow. My camera is gone so I am assuming that my daughter took with her to San Jose on a girls day out trip.

A good friend is a professional trainer in Chattanooga. He just moved to a new facility and had to get rid of some of his training gear. He knows I like rope and.....well, this is what he gave me yesterday (actually donated it to our Boy Scout troop)....a spliced manila rope and a Bacher ladder.

They came with some nice gear for set-up.

You can see better pictures of the spliced manila in the House of Splice

08-19-2006, 03:07 PM
I've had my leather weaver scabbard the same as Paul posted, for
nearly three years and it just now has to be replaced as the tip
of the saw protrudes about 2 inches, I guess it's more like a prolapsed saw.

Figure it will snag on stuff readily and I can't be havin that.

I like the maleability and flex of the leather. The bad side is your handsaw
gradually sinks down as it cuts the sideof the scabbard. Duct tape only slows
the process.

Invisible lock stitching already in place, Carl. I've heard that velocity is very hard to splice, but it wasn't as bad as I was expecting. Getting the needle through the thick bits of the splice to stitch it was a serious pain in the butt, though. I was gonna add a whiplock too, just because it looks so cool, but after stitching I was over it. I need to get a sailor's palm.

How did you burry the cover? I always have had a bugger of a time getting it through. Tophopper yanked on it quite a few times and got it through faster than I have ever thought about. Whats your method?

rumination
09-20-2006, 02:30 AM
Like Tophopper, sharply and repeatedly yanking the hell out of it is the key for me. Once I figured that out, all my double braid splices became so much easier. Flex the throat, milk it, and then snap it sharply 5 or so times. Repeat until bury is complete. This, of course, requires a SOLID anchor point.

We should ask Nick what he does. Nick?

Edit: I'll put this in the splicing forum, where he'll see it.

Brendon, congrats on the Zubat. I used the scabbard as is until after the second time it came apart on me while in the tree. I have a decent saw shop locally. Been dealing there for on fifteen years now. It chaned owners about eight years ago but still pretty good Savoy Equipment in Vernon. As I'm walking out the door today the owner tells me that they're starting to carry arborist equipment now because of the demand. I'm like WTF? I'm thinking this is not such a good thing. They've got a nice line-up of Buck spurs and some biners and a few lines and stuff. I hope this doesn't mean that we're getting flooded with new guys just like myself.

10-21-2006, 11:55 PM
Squish. lotsa demand? hm. I have heard there is lots of work in the interior, Kelowna way and all, not too much word abot your locale. you ever hear of a saw shop in clearwater? there was a guy on arboristsite a few years ago had amod shop up there.

Ya I mean I don't want people to flock here but I'm local and know alot of people. All my work is word of mouth zero advertising no name or number on my trucks. People ask me why I don't have a name or number and I tell them when I run out of work then I will advertise. I have everything from pruning basically bushes to removals lined up right now. It was so busy this spring that I heard no one was doing quote anymore. Call me to come do it and I'll bill ya otherwise not interested is how it went for most of this spring.

I haven't gotten to post to this thread in too long...so here goes.

Last year we took a disaster relief team to Katrina for 2 weeks. In the process of getting ready to go I was contacted by Charlie, a climber from Louisiana, who was interested in linking up with us...that linkup didn't happen. He ended up doing his own thing...he bought a lot of very nice gear for climbing and rigging, used it and, for various reasons, had to get rid of some of it. He contacted me about two weeks ago to see if I was interested in his gear. Here is what I got today.:D

The saddle and saw will generate threads of their own.

He is going to try to drive it tomorrow, didn't get it till tonight, but I took if for a spin around the lake to check out some of the 3600 trees we planted. Next year he gets a 72" Exmark mower to mow between the house and the lake. :)

got a new bar put on my 'new' saw yesterday, bought it used, nose sprocket locked up after a very short use period (like 30 seconds) so I went back to the shop and they replaced it no problem.

Carl, cool lil' putter-putter...your Dad is gonna love it. The mobility to get around, especially if you have nice rolling land like that, is a great gift.

You can carry gear in it...it'll come in handy when you have a Tree Rendezvous at YOUR lake!!;)

Well I needed a new cordless drill as my Black and Decker was fubar'd. I decided to upgrade since they were cheap today. Instead of going cheap... I paid for a nice one I had seen a few weeks back on sale today for $99 (was $194).

Yes, it was a Black Friday bargain. No I did not rush out for it this morning. I bought it after the sale was over(eneded at 11 AM) at 1:30 PM, and yes it was still on sale.

Looks good Jason, is it a rebadged DeWalt? Sure looks like it. I have a DeWalt 12v that's over 12 years old and still kickin. The 14.4's were just starting to come out when I got it and the 18's were just a fantasy.

I'm not quite sure Brian. I know that P-C and DeWalt, are owned by Black and Decker. I know my P-C plate jointer shares some features in its fence that are similar to the DeWalt. All I know is a standard Black and Decker will not survive me, and a Craftsman Cordless Drill is near about junk(1 18v with a broken chuck and declining battery performance, and 19.2v that could not survive shop work with my Uncle-another dead battery). His old 12v DeWalt is still going strong. I wanted another Bosch 12v, but none would work with the batteries with my impact driver. I figured I'd try a P-C since I am way to poor for a Milwaukee Set. I can at least by other P-C 19.2v tools one at the time and they will work off of the same battery packs.

Yes... I am a poor boy with tool snob tastes

Wow. I've kept my old 12v DeWalt going by buying new battery packs at about $45 each. 18v can't be more than $60 or so.
