Do you think that a 54" bar and full comp is to much on a 3120? I know chip clearance will be an issue but it will be used for stumping mostly.

Shouldn't be an issue. The only thing I have skip chain for is my 72".

...the only thing I don't run full skip on is the 200's.But that's as much a cultural/regional thing as anything else.

I'm running full comp on my 880 with 42" but that is only because the local dealers don't carry skip chain, and I can't order Stihl .404 chain online. I'm running skip on my 395 with 32" bar and it easily outcuts the 880. I only pull out the 880 for the massive stumps too big for the 32" bar on the 395.

There is only full comp to be had in Denmark.
If you can get hold of some skip chain, use it.

FWIW the Homey in my avatar with a 48" usable past the dogs is running full .I do have a 25 foot roll of .404 skip but never needed to roll up a loop .It's the very last roll of .404 by .058 that Baileys ever sold I believe . I would recommend though running a 7 tooth no matter if it's .404 or 3/8" on a bar that long .

If its for stumping your near rocks so avoid semi or full skip chain. Full comp chain loses alot less cutter length then skip chain when rocked out.
Rule of thumb is a average rocked out full comp chain loses a 1/4-plus of the cutter, skip loses 1/2-plus.
Yes in the ideal cutting world of the PNW where stumps are cut chest high and limbing involves walking with caulks on the trunk, full skip is supreme

Speaking of stumping .Not to change the subject but this morning I had the bright idea to use a 36" Sthl mount I usually run on the big Homelite on an 084 .All this time I thought it was an 084 mount size .Wrong the pot licker was the medium size mount for like from 026 to 066 .Oh well .

Oregon recommends skip tooth chain on bar lengths 24" and longer, FWIW.

Yeah: Has anybody seen that youtube clip in a while of the guy from NorCal who had the super-zipped ms460 that Dean from Madsen's had hopped-up for him. I remember he had a 32" reduced weight on it and semi-skip on it. Man, it seemed like that thing just screamed through dead Doug.

Bingo...if you're running real bars, it makes a difference
.Doug Dent, in many ways as old school a PNW cutter as ever walked the Earth, has been recommending semi-skip to us for a fair number of years now. I've yet to follow that advice, but then I still have a piece of a spool on the shelf in my shed. All and all, as happy as I've been for 30+ years running full chisel/full skip, I doubt I'll ever change now.

Wonder what was the preferred chain on long bars when they were still using the big half-inch pitch chain, if there was the option? You get a lot of clearance space with the large cutters. I still run half-inch on my 090G, and it is full comp. Some beautiful chain by the way, with long cutters meant to last.

I'm not even sure they even made skip back in the 1/2" chain days .I know they made chisel but all I've ever seen personally has been chipper chain .

And if you stump with it... as has been said, faster to sharpen.

In my experience, skip actually cuts faster on those longer bars- so yes, I think FC is too much, even if the motor will drag it just fine.
