I just heard of a person that had a disease that would eventually render them deaf and blind. Can you imagine that? I would kill myself ASAP.
Thoughts?

that would be hard to accept.

Karina and I have practiced walking around "blind." One time we took turns holding eachother's arm while being led around blind in the city. It took a LOT of getting used to it. But even after an hour we each got good at it.
I think a person would adapt.

Being deaf (or nearly so) sucks ass.
It's just as frustrating to have to ask people to repeat themselves as it is for them to repeat what they said. I don't wish it on anyone.

I can perhaps handle one of those ailments, but BOTH???

I was blind, retina burn, for 24 hours.
I was deaf, ruptured ear drums for forty eight hours.
Given a choice, I'll take blind. Given both, I'll take a bullet!

I think I would lose my mind if it were so for me. I don't do well with out being in the outdoors doing things. Not climbing trees again etc would be a serious loss in my mind. Not to mention ever hearing or seeing my kids again :(

Really? She was born that way.
Just imagine going through it after you knew what you were missing!

Often thought about which would be worse? If it happens to you in life, you are tortured by what you are missing, but if you are born that way, you wouldn't have any sort of reference point to learn from and how torturous that must be. Maybe I'm missing something. Messed up either way.

I think I would prefer deaf to blind. Being deaf I could still enjoy wood working, still work trimming trees, watch tv with closed captions, see my grand kids, enjoy looking at beautiful women, etc.
I just think being blind would be so much worse.

I think I would prefer deaf to blind.
It's not a preference.

Hmm. I'd do everything I could beforehand, obviously. But I'd do my best to prepare for it as well. Learning sign language....I know I couldn't respond, but I could at least express my thoughts. Learn braile. Man, it'd be tough to accept.

I know in the case you stated you would end up with being both deaf and blind. I was just giving my opinion of which would be the lesser of two evils. Either one is bad and both would be like having your mind shut down to the outside world.
Minneapolis had the School for the Blind. I remember riding the city bus and being totally amazed at these people with their white canes out just after a snowstorm navigating the city sidewalks covered with snowbanks, etc. The did it. I don't know how. BUt they did it.
Here in Danville, we had the School for the Deaf. See them quite frequently, Walmart used to hire many.
I've seen how it really depends on the person how they handle it...just like everything else. Some lay down and say 'whoa is me', others say 'shit' and get on with it.
To lose BOTH senses, I'm sure most would at least immediately think a bullet would be best....BUT....I'm hoping that I would end up being in the later category and figure it out. I think a very SOCIAL person would have a rough time, but anyone with some self sufficiency should have a better chance.
Pinball, maybe??

I have an old friend who is blind, and a multi talented musician. Hanging out with the guy is a real trip, especially going for a walk with him. He hears stuff like you can't believe. Without hearing, I think he would much much greater suffer.
His ex wife is blind musician too, a very attractive woman. Over at their house, I had to sometimes remind them to turn on the lights at night for me. My friend would laugh at that. She had an affair with the guitar player, and they split up. It really wiped out my friend. The guitar player can see. Can you imagine stealing a blind guy's wife! What a crud.

Yu know MB,
I distinctly remember a dream I had as a young man in which I was standing in god's presence and was cowered by it, seeking something to hide behind I grew enough courage to peek out at it from behind my rock, I was stunned to see it was a magnificent glowing bright tree, pulsing with life to the degree it could only be glimpsed at without being overwhelmed by it's majesty.
