I probably had to many xmas cookies and beer when I thought this one up....but. The Blue ridge parkway has some closures due to construction. So I hatched a plan to hike/bushwhack up this ridge about an hour to the closed section, then ride the next five miles down to a car we left....I know dumb way to learn, but hell it was fun. A bit windy and the occassional cement truck kept us on our toes. I think I will do it again. Ross, one of my employees has ridin alot so he was psyched to try it to.......
Yes this was my first time riding a long board, so I had to stay low in fear of eating asphalt.
the approach up to Lane Pinnacle....a few shots of the ridge we hiked up. You can see the raod cut if you look close. Drops an average of 200' per mile
dragged my homemade slide gloves into submission!:O

It was a bit steeper then it looks......I could not stand very well unless the grade was less. In sections the pavement sucked and there was derbris in sections. I was a bit wigged about the cement trucks since I was a noob. I will do it again though.....maybe on sunday when there will be NO traffic. I changed to shoes instead of boots, which made a huge difference.
I got a little faster......but I was in survival mode since it was my first time.
Andrew, this was from the edge of the watershed down to bull creek gap, heading towards the Folk Art Center. Total elevation loss was around 15oo' in five miles.Wanna go?
My redneck slide gloves had cutting board pieces screwed to them...

Yeah, that dude was goin pretty fast. The foot drag isn't hard, you just have to get used to riding while balancing on one foot. :D
Those big turns are the hard part cause your rear wheels melt a little when you hit those turns going really fast. Getting really low and forward on the board helps keep ya from fishtailing and slamming. I remember trying to take a turn back in maryland going way too fast. I didn't make it and hit the curb on the outside of the turn, did a front flip and a half into this lady's yard and landed in her bush. If I had got real low and leaned in more I would have made it, which I learned later.

Cool beans John. I havent ridden a rollerboard down a hill in a long time. I think the last time I did I got the speed wobbles and did a few cartwheels, ended up landing in the ER. Many a crash on the wooden planked wheel board for me back in the day. Scars on the hips, knees, elbows and wrists from pavement interventions.

It's legal here. Dudes are always doing it on the road up to my house, well all summer anyways. I'm really suprised no one has been killed yet. Beginning of last year a car drove off the road to miss a guy, big accident but no serious injuries, I can't beleive they allow it. Every year they have a big race here down one of the local subdivisions, close the hole thing off for it. I've followed these guys down at some pretty decent speeds 60-70kph.

Once you get over the fear thing, speed becomes a habit forming elixir, like the tension is a rush. I'm speculating here ;)
I do know a speed skier, once ranked third in the world, not the kind that go around the gates, but straight down wearing specially designed suits. She is mild and petite, and with her hubby now runs a lakeside Italian restaurant I love to frequent. When she talks about going straight down at over 200 kph, a fierce tiger starts dancing in her eyes.
Pretty hot too 8)

Yeah, that last run was just too hot for those ol' wheels. Put some new, softer ones on when I got home. I'll cruise on those for a while. Maybe, they'll slide a little better.
I went to the skatepark later on, and rode around for a couple hours. ...left after I got tired of 8 year olds showing me up. It's ok... 8 year olds still can't throw down big, just smooth. ...I'll get that back someday. :whine:
