Pretty bummed out right now... catastrophic failure of a rod bearing in the truck... I have built countless small block Chevy's and never had this happen... Either I overlooked something, or it was just a one in a million that the bearing was defective... not sure at this point.
Engine has to come back out. Hopefully caught it in time to only have the crank turned, and new bearings. Need to check the oil pump to make sure there is no trash in it. Not even 200 miles on the engine...
This could have not come at a worse time... I am scraping for cash as it is dealing with the bullshit I'm goin' through with lawyers with me ex-wife... This isn't gonna be super expensive, but it ain't gonna be cheap either... plus the time I have to put back in... X-mas right around the corner too... Holy cats...
When it rains it pours...
If it wasn't for bad luck, I wouldn't have any...
This sucks... :( I'll keep you guys posted.

Damn, Gary. That sucks. :(
And I understand about the money thing, it's tight for all of us right now. Perhaps it might not be a bad idea to just set it aside until after the holidays, then address it with a fresh start in the new year.
But however you address it, I just hope it's not too much damage.
GASoline71
11-02-2008, 01:44 PM
I have given some serious thought to that Brian... just to kinda "forget it" for a spell, and do it after all the shit blows over and wait for after X-mas...
But I need a truck, and a second vehicle. I am in the mindframe to "get it done" right now... so I might go with it.
My girls and I were out for a drive in it last night when it started knockin'. I knew what it was and limped it home... I was pretty bummed out, and the girls were tryin' to console me on it. My oldest had tears in her eyes and told me it would be okay. God bless her... she said to me, "Dad... it's okay, we can skip X-mas in December this year, and do it later..." Chokes me up just typing it...

Good kids Gary, really good kids!!! Lots to be thankful for there!
I went through this few years ago. Neighbor kid had a Camero he was putting motor after motor in. 383's. Kept spinning bearings in it.
I told him his builder was a moron after the fourth oneand I built the fith. I went throught this thing with a finetooth comb!! Mikedand plastigauged EVERYTHING that I could!
I tuned it out and had it running good. I go with the adage "break it in like you are going to run it" but he wouldn't stick his foot in it. I took it out and roasted it out, run it hard!
Three weeks later had a knock to it!
I don't know if it was bad bearings, Clevite, or crap in the crank from being turned, I honestly don't know.
Doesn't help much, but it's not just you.

yeah my girls are pretty special... They are my world and my happiness...
I hear ya Andy... it happens. I have had other things happen after a rebuild, but nothing this major. Everybody I know that has built their fair share has had something along this line happen to them sooner or later... mine was just later...
The "Muscle Truck" will live... I promise ya!

Sorry G. You'll kick this in the ass like you do everything else. And then give it time, and it'll be something you sit down with someone over a beer and say, "dammit to hell, one time I built this motor, had less than 200 miles on it and....."
You'll get it up and runnin' again.
Take care of them girls mang. They're takin' care of you.

Damage was a little worse than I initially thought. :(
Pulled the engine out on Thursday... complete tear down. Headed over to the machine shop later today to see what is saveable and what is junk...
Seemed weird to pull a super clean engine with less than 100 miles on it out of a vehicle...

Pretty bummed out right now... catastrophic failure of a rod bearing in the truck... ...
Gary I just caught this myself .Don't feel pregnant ,it happened to me once on a four bolt 350 . I had failed to finish torquing one of the rods . Since that happened I have always marked them with a felt pen .
Chit happens ,lick your wounds and go on . People that don't screw up are the ones that don't do anything .The rest of us run into these rocks in the river every so often .;)

Yep... I am trudging forward Al... the block and main caps are okay... the rods are okay... the crank, cam, and lifters are shot.
Cylinder heads are okay too... but I need to have the block hot tanked (or baked), new cam bearings, and new oil gallery plugs, and new soft plugs installed.
I will have the Machine Shop do the cam bearings... I can install the plugs.
Gary

11-10-2008, 04:02 PM
OK, you say the crank, cam and lifters are shot. How, exactly? Have you got any ideas as to what happened? 'Shot' as in bent and broken, or scored? Was it a lubrication issue?
Jonseredbred
11-10-2008, 05:04 PM
Sounds like a wierd blow up?
Al Smith
11-11-2008, 10:57 AM
A lot of thngs could have happened ,like a plugged oil galley . Usually if a small block throws a rod it will snap the cam and usually break the bottom out of the cylinder where that failure occurs but not every time .
Did it toss a rod bearing or spin it ?
Tanking the block should assure all the oil passages are clear ,good idea .It's also a good idea to have the shop install the cam bearing because they are a beech if you don't have the correct driver .
I haven't done a rebuild in years but when I did all the parts were slavered heavy with STP .If it didn't blow smoke for ten minutes after start up I worried I didn't use enough .:\:
GASoline71
11-11-2008, 11:04 AM
Scored... bad. #1 & #2 rod journal had 1/16" ridge where #1 rod bearing spun... :(
What was figured to have happened was that the camshaft and lifters were failing during initial break-in due to lack of lubrication. Which in turn put a lot of trash in the oil which clogged up the oil pump. Oil pump no pumpy... bad ju-ju.
I used a different type of cam and lifter lube for this rebuild. One I have never used before. It was not some cheapy alternative stuff either. However when I contacted said manufacturer of lubricant... they have so many stipulations on what is done during the break-in prodedure, they basically cover their own ass for any type of failure. :X
Anyways... I'm not sure if any of you guys are aware of this but over the last 10 years, oil manufacturers have reduced the amount of zinc in motor oils. Mainly because the big 3 were bitchin' about the zinc causing problems with the newer more stringent emissions laws. They founded studies that said that the zinc was messing with O2 sensors, and catalytic converters. So they oil companies have slowly been taking zinc out of the oils... even diesel oils.
There is still zinc in the oils... just at an extremely low ratio. What does this mean in laymans terms? for newer engines it means nothing... because the newer engines are made with this in mind. What it means for older engines like mine... is that the zinc dithiophosphate (ZDDP) that used to be in oils to lubricate the flat tappet camshaft and lifters is not enough to maintain proper lubrication. So you have to take extra special precautions during engine rebuilds, and add additives to the oil at every oil change. General Motors, Ford, MOPAR, and some of the big name camshaft manufacturers all make the oil additives to run in older vehilcles.
A simple (but expensive) way to go about it... is to not use a flat tappet cam and lifter setup... going to a full roller cam and lifter setup would mean you don't have to worrry about the friction between the cam and tappet causing excessive wear since there is a roller there in stead of a flat tappet. However you are gonna be over $400 bucks into a roller setup. Hindsight being 20/20 I prolly should just save the money and do a full roller deal... but it's not an option right now.
So if any of you are driving older vehicles (Like pre-1990 or so) without roller cams and lifters... you ought to start looking into the ZDDP oil additives...
Sorry for the long winded post... but I figured i might as well explain it the best I could. :)

After thought .If that thing had a cast crank another thing could have happened .If they spun the crank in the wrong direction while grinding it will cause the fibers to form burrs .So small you can't see them .These little microscopic things will eat right through the babbit in the bearing shells .
To properly grind a crank it must be final lapped using fine lapping paper .Just a pass over a stone doesn't cut it ,no good ,it will fail . To test for burs ,rub a penny over the crank throws .If it pulls copper it has burrs . Engine building trivia 101 .;)
While I'm rambling ,a crankshaft is not the type cast iron most think it is .It is in fact nodular iron ,some call it "semi steel " .It machines entirely different that grey cast . This stuff will pull a semi chip if machined under great pressure and cutting speeds .It in essence pulls the carbides from the metal where they form exremely hard chips .Unlike regular cast which just forms powder about like coal dust . These carbide like materials are what cause the burrs .Machining trivia 101 .

Here is something else to ponder .Most older engines were set for 2.5-3.5 thou clearence on the mains/rods and ran 10w-30 oil . If somebody decided to regrind a precision fit for about a thou clearence like these newer engines ,not good .That is so tight you have to run 5w -20 or you won't pump the oil .
Another thing ,good oil pressure is of course always optimum .You get too much pressure on that tight of clearance it can "wash " the babbit right off the shells .Sounds odd maybe to most but it can and has happened although it usually takes more than a couple hundred miles .
All this info came from dear old departed Dad .He was engaged in auto engine research for years in his job and had seen it all .

Alright... went out today and was messin' around with a buddy of mine. Matt has a ridiculously fast 1972 Monte Carlo. We went for a little "drive" this afternoon, and had a ball... I built the 355 SBC in Matt's Monte... what a sweet ride, and it hauls ass too...
First vid... from my view driving... Matt passing me in his Monte...

Second vid... is me passing Matt after a short while... with my window down... it sound like the truck is "cutting out"... but trust me... it's not. =)

Third vid... pullin' in to a rest stop on south Whidbey Island... you can hear the cam in my truck, and the sound of Matt's wicked Monte too...

A piston from a Briggs and Stratton or a beer keg tapper handle works well too if you're talking early old school American hot rodding . I imagine 350 Chevy engines will live on for the next 50 years or so in one form or another .
The Ford 8BA flatheads are at least that old and still can be found in limited numbers .

The ol' beast still hauls ass! :evil4:
I had to replace the voltage regulator and alternator. When they went they fried the battery too... but that was under warranty.
Haven't done much else to it. Now that I'm movin' in to a place with a decent garage with heat... I have some winter plans for the monster.
Short list:
Gonna lower it 2", Needs better radiator mounts, Overhaul transmission with new clutch packs and all the other innards, Some interior work, also update the ignition system (distributor and coil).

They were for 2 auxilliary fuel tanks. There are 2 holes in the bed of the truck as well. Truck was ordered that way. Shows on the factory build sheet. It also has factory cruise control (vacuum actuated). There was a hand lever in the floorboards just in front of the drivers side of the seat where the driver could switch from the main tank, to either one of the aux. tanks.
The truck was used as a camper hauler... so the bed is pristine with no rust, and 'nary a dent in it.

Nice looking job. I got my son a bender like that for Christmas a couple years ago. It looks like it works well. No comment from my son yet.
How do you like the flaring tool? I bought one from NAPA years ago. KD. Not that good. One of my sons friends used it when I wasn't around and broke the little stub off. He replaced the whole set with some Chinese hunk of crap. I would like to trade it in, if possible. I looked at Craftsman and kinda liked how they were built. I think they were kinda pricey and I resisted. If they bend 3/8 and do a good job they must be pretty good. Happy with it?
GASoline71
02-16-2011, 03:19 PM
The tubing bender is from Mac Tools. It's a quality product. Nice clean bends, and has marks for 45, 90, 135, and 180 degrees.
The Craftsman flare tool is the cats ass. Nice 45 degree flares. Cool part is you can clamp it in a vice for better stability. :)

3 boxes showed up in the last week or so. 1 from Summit Racing, 1 from Randy's Ring & Pinion, and the other from Jeg's High Performance.
MSD 8.5mm Super Conductor plug wires, Eaton posi-traction rear carrier, Richmond 3.73 ring and pinion, Mr. Gasket vacuum canister, and a Yukon Gear 12-bolt rebuild kit with bearings and seals.
The rear end rebuild is gonna take a lotta work. One of my buds and I are gonna yard the rear end outta the truck and clean it up. Then I'll take it to my bro-in-law so he can rebuild it. I also have new drums, drum brakes, wheel cylinders, and brake hardware kits too.
I've put this rear end rebuild off for 3 years. Finally saved up the coin to get it done. :)

Cool how the truck project keeps going on. What exactly does the new rear end give you, more positive engagement?
GASoline71
05-25-2011, 07:24 PM
Exactly Jay... right now it is an "open" differential, where only one tire gets all the power. The posi-traction (or limited slip) has clutches in it that when under power engages both rear axles so you get positive engagement to both rear wheels instead of one.

Gary, get the power to the road. And dont crowd my gear with greazy truck parts eh? Only a week or so more and they will be outta your way.
Posi = how to kill a know it all teenager. At least almost, I put my Z-28 into a sui-slide with posi once (haha ok more than once), a know it all attitude and a spot of rain. did a 90 left, 90 right, 90 left and recovered it. Tagged both gravel shoulders with the rear wheels that day. Needed to stop and get out, paused to reflect on my actions, got new tires the next day, like that was the problem LOL!

Exactly why I am runnin' it as well Brian. The truck 12 bolts are a little weaker than the car 12 bolts, and the carrier bearings are know to deflect under a hard load. So the Moser unit with the preload adjusters on the bearing caps help out a lot.
